Burkhard H. Schneider

TRAVERSE CITY — Burkhard H. Schneider, 87, of Grosse Pointe Woods and Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, after returning from the Caribbean. He was born on Jan. 25, 1925, in Wolfenbüttel, Germany, to the late Heinrich and Alice Schneider (Hackhausen).

Burk was preceded in death by his bride of 57 years, Patricia Mary Grabb. They resided in Grosse Pointe Woods for 41 years. He moved to Traverse City in 2011.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Burk graduated from Cornell University in 1947 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation he moved to Detroit, where he accepted a job as an engineer for the Detroit Edison Co. He worked his way up in the company finally retiring at the age of 65 as Senior Vice President.

Community activities were an important part of Burk's life. He served as Chairman of the Board for Goodwill Industries and as Deacon for the Grosse Pointe Woods Presbyterian Church.

He loved playing duplicate bridge, sailing, golfing, traveling and spending time with his family.

Burk is survived by his four children, Christine (Linda), of Traverse City, Steve (Noreen), of Novi, Fred (Ruth), of Libertyville, Ill., and Margaret (Steve) Alexander, of Traverse City; as well as his sister, Marianne Weigel, of Kensington, Calif. He was the loving grandfather of 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Consistent with Burk's wishes, there will be no funeral service.
