SUTTONS BAY — Sarjenna Colleen Porter Thompson, 87, of Suttons Bay, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Tendercare of Leelanau, surrounded by her loving family and her faithful friend, Tracker, the Tendercare house dog.
Sarjenna was born on Jan. 23, 1925, at the family home in Bowling Green, Ohio, as the youngest of five children to Claude A. and Gladys R. (Phelps) Porter. On June 30, 1944, also in Bowling Green, she married W. Ted Thompson, who preceded her in death on July 4, 1988.
Sarjenna loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed music and sang in various church choirs. Sarjenna was a charter member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Ypsilanti.
Sarjenna and her husband retired to Tavares, Fla., and in 1993 moved to Traverse City to be closer to her daughter. She was active in the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City.
Sarjenna is survived by her daughter, Beth Ann (Mike) Scott, of Suttons Bay; a sister, Doris Rife; two grandchildren, Michael S. (Kristina) Hiler and Patricia S. (Craig) Bindus; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Sarjenna was preceded in death by a daughter, Jenna Ponce Ash; a sister, Ethel Williams; and brothers, Van Porter and Bud Porter.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City. The Rev. Becky Chamberlain will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bowling Green, Ohio, at a later date.
