Harold Cecil Cunningham

PEORIA, Ariz. — Harold Cunningham, of Peoria, Ariz., passed away July 20, 2012. He was born June 28, 1927, in Toledo, Ohio, to Harold C. Sr. and Lucille Derry Cunningham.

He lived most of his life in Michigan, graduating from Dearborn High and University of Michigan School of Architecture.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He practiced architecture with Gordon Comwell and then Strong, Drury and Cunningham in Traverse City for many years. He then became project manager for Albert Kahn and Associates in Detroit for 20 years, retiring in 1987 to Arizona.

He was predeceased by his parents; first wife, Elizabeth C. Holloway, her mother, Margaret Holloway; brother, Bill; and stepdaughter, Deborah Hatheway Smith.

A gentle quiet considerate man, his wife calls him "the world's dearest man." He loved exchanging stories with friends, jazz and all big band music, sailing, golf, crossword puzzles and Sudoku. He was a founding member of Traverse City's Premiere Bridge Club. He loved Chatham, Mass., where he summered since 1972 with his second wife, Kay Brown.

He leaves wife, Kay; son, Scott (Carrie); daughters, Lisa Roberts (Dale), Leslie Sabo (Mark), Becky Smith Coggins (Dwain) and Sarah Gray (Jim); seven grandsons, Chris, Ben, Tyler, Nathaniel, Travis, Jeremy and Tim; two step granddaughters, Rachel and Suzanne. Nathaniel, just graduated from the University of Michigan. Harold was exceedingly proud of his family.

A memorial service will be held Aug. 18 at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Faith Presbyterian Church, 16000 N. Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, AZ.
