Ellen van Antwerp Barrows

TRAVERSE CITY — Ellen van Antwerp Barrows, 82, of Traverse City and formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio, died June 22, 2012, at her home. Ellen was born on Dec. 28, 1929, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Nicholas and Florence (Reece) van Antwerp.

Ellen worked at Burke Market Research as a telephone interviewer for 20 years.

She was a Vanguard Member of the Grand Traverse Land Conservancy.

Ellen died peacefully in the company of family. She will be remembered for her love of Northern Michigan and all it represented, memories of West Bay, family, dear friends, for her love of nature and flowers, and for her devotion to animals, especially her cat, Misty.

Ellen is survived by her son, Thomas van Antwerp Barrows, of Traverse City; nieces and nephews, Nick Gibson (Nina), of Tucson, Ariz., Jeremy Gibson (Anni Macht), of Traverse City, Dana Fabe (Randy Simpson), of Anchorage, Alaska, Lissy Fabe (Chris Taylor), Bill Fabe (Carolyn) and Ellie Fabe (Frank Russell), all of Cincinnati, Ohio. She is also survived by her great-nieces and nephews, Andy, Ben and Robin Taylor-Fabe, Mia Simpson, Drew and Sarah-Margaret Gibson, David and Charlotte Fabe and Georgie and Reed Russell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas van Antwerp and Florence Reece; her sisters, Greta van Antwerp Gibson and Mary van Antwerp Fabe; and her daughter, Barbara H. Barrows.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Traverse Land Conservancy or the Cherryland Humane Society.
