SUTTONS BAY — Leo Joseph Skowronski, 88, of Suttons Bay, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at Tendercare of Leelanau surrounded by loving family.
Leo was born on March 16, 1924, in Elmira, Mich., the son of Casmier and Catherine (Gazella) Skowronski. On Oct. 29, 1949, at St. Thomas Church in Elmira, he married Barbara F. Kurth, who survives.
Leo worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad until he entered the U.S. Army. He served his country during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
After serving his country, Leo returned to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Elmira, where he also worked for Bual's Potato Farms for a few years before moving to Battle Creek to work at Post Cereal with his brothers.
In 1954, Leo moved his family to Suttons Bay, where the family settled on a small farm and Leo once again worked for the railroad.
As the railroad industry began to give way to other means of transportation, Leo went to work for the Leelanau County Road Commission, where he retired in 1986. Leo continued his small farm operation for several years.
In addition to his loving wife of 63 years, Leo is survived by his 11 children, Diane (Bill) Grant, Delores (Bill) Dunn, Mary (Chuck) Skowronski, Tom (Judy) Skowronski, Gloria (Keith) Kaufman, Florence (Brad) Saxton, Leo (Dawn) Skowronski, Patricia Thornsbury, Marsha (Dennis) Grant, John (Steve Raphaelson) Skowronski, and Cathy Jo Skowronski; brother, Joe Skowronski; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Cecelia Dzwik, Delores Gaskill, and Sophia Dzwik; and brothers, Edward, Henry, and Ray Skowronski.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suttons Bay. The Rev. Leonard Paul will serve as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery in the spring.
