TRAVERSE CITY — Shirley Jeannette Dalley, 81, of Traverse City, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Jan. 23, 2013, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Shirley was born on Dec. 5, 1931, in Warren, R.I., to the late Henry and Gertrude (Black) Peterson.

Shirley graduated from the Elmwood Junior College in Barrington, R.I.

On Oct. 25, 1952, she married Donald Dalley in Warren, R.I.; he preceded her in death in 1998.

In 1955 Donald and Shirley moved to Traverse City. She loved to take care of children and operated her own day care for over 20 years.

She also was employed as a nurse's aid for 10-plus years at the medical care facility, which is known today as Grand Traverse Pavilions.

Shirley enjoyed reading and spending time with her family.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Mark Dalley, Steven (Sanja) Dalley, John (Jillene) Dalley and Peter (Holly) Dalley; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Jean Haggadone; as well as many other family members and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her sisters, Barbara Peterson and Florence Hall.

Per Shirley's wishes, cremation has taken place. The family is planning a memorial gathering to celebrate Shirley's life in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation, Community Meals, Child and Family Services or to the American Cancer Crippled Children's Fund.
