BENZONIA — Douglas E. Joy Jr., 67, of Benzonia, died Wednesday, March 28, 2012, with his family by his side. He was born Feb. 3, 1945, in Frankfort, the son of Douglas and Helen (Bennett) Joy Sr.
Doug worked as a custodian for Benzie Central Schools for 30 years. He was a firefighter for Benzonia Township from 1976 to 1989 and an EMT for 21A from 1982 to 2000. He also served as the Emergency Management Director for Benzie County from January 1986 to June 2001.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church U.C.C. in Benzonia.
Doug was a lover of life, and he enjoyed helping others in any way that he could. Most of all, Doug loved to spend time with his family and friends, especially with his grandchildren.
On Feb. 4, 1966, on Crystal Lake, in Beulah, Doug married Linda Lorraine Haase, who survives him.
He is also survived by four children, Donald (Corinna) Joy, of Chandler, Ariz., Michele (Jack) Griffin, of Flowery Branch, Ga., Donovan Haase, of Charlevoix, and Victoria Joy, of Benzonia; five grandchildren, Austin Joy, Joshua Joy, Jack Douglas Griffin, Lauryn Griffin and Jaeda Haase; his father, Douglas E. Joy Sr., of Benzonia; two brothers, Robert "Bob" (Kris) Joy, of Wyoming, and Stephen James "Jim" Joy, of Arizona; and his mother-in-law, Mary Lou Patee of Benzonia.
Doug was preceded in death by his mother; his infant daughter, Melody Lynn Joy; and his father-in-law, Edward Haase.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2012, at the First Congregational Church U.C.C. in Benzonia, with the Rev. Daniel E. Furman officiating. Interment will follow in the Benzonia Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Benzie Central High School Choir, the Benzonia Township Fire Department 21A, or to the American Cancer Society.
