Eileen Rose Newman

TRAVERSE CITY — Eileen Rose Newman, 84, of Traverse City, passed away on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at Munson Hospice House surrounded by her loving family. Eileen was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Aloysius and Nellie (Courtade) Courtad.

On Feb. 27, 1954, at the St. Francis Rectory, she married the love of her life, Richard "Rich" T. Newman. Together they lovingly raised three wonderful children.

Boating on the Great Lakes with her family and friends brought great pleasure during the beautiful summer months. Eileen and Rich also enjoyed their active lifestyle while wintering in Arizona. Vacations, playing cards and socializing with her longtime friends were very special to her.

Most important to Eileen was the time she spent with her grandchildren; she loved them each dearly.

Eileen will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother and great friend.

Surviving Eileen are her children, Richard A. (Catherine) Newman, of Traverse City, Sandra A. (William) Popa, of Houston, Texas, and Todd R. (Michelle) Newman, of Traverse City; nine grandchildren, Nicholas, Rebecca and Jonathan Newman, Danielle, Nicole and Kyle Popa, and Jacob, Sara and Tessa Newman; siblings, Eugene (Inez) Courtade, Marie (Al) Keaton, Al (Murna) Courtade, Patricia (Jim) Franke, Joan (Luke) Romis, Gerry (William) Smith and Dolores (Dan) Kress; along with her loving dog, Buttons; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rich; siblings, Ken, Richard, Don and Bernard.

Visitation will be held for Eileen today, Dec. 28, 2012, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recitation at 7 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at St. Francis Catholic Church. Fr. Kenneth Stachnik will officiate.
