LAKELAND, Fla. — Vernon O. Hayes, 90, formerly of Traverse City, passed away at home in Lakeland on Jan. 4, 2013, due to natural causes.
Born in Michigan, Mr. Hayes worked for over 30 years with the William E. Wright Company as a salesman selling products and notions for the sewing business. He entered the U.S. Army at 19 years old and served during World War II with the 47th Armored Battalion. He was part of the group that liberated Paris. In December of 2012, he received a letter from the French government awarding him the Legion of Honor Medal for his participation.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; two sons, Scott R. Hayes and Grant L. Hayes; a daughter, Isabel C. Hayes; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 7, 2013, at Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home in Lakeland.
