Eunice M. Scheffler

ALDEN — Eunice M. Scheffler, age 89, of Alden, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2012, at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradington, Fla. She was born on March 24, 1923, in Bliss Township in Emmet County, to the late Lawrence and Nina (Johnson) Kilpatrick.

Eunice married Leo Scheffler on July 15, 1946, in Traverse City. They moved to Alden in 1982 when Leo retired from teaching in Cape Corunna, which was just one of the areas in which he taught. Together they raised three wonderful daughters.

Eunice was known as the Mom on the block in the different towns where Leo was a teacher. She started the Girl Scout Troop in North Adams, which is still going strong.

Eunice was active in the Eastern Star and was a Guardian for Jobs Daughters. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Eunice was always in the choir at the different churches she and Leo attended throughout his teaching career.

She was an avid reader and loved collecting dolls and gardening. Eunice's grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. She will be deeply missed by all.

Eunice is survived by her loving companion, Al Coleman; her devoted daughters, Carolyn Burrus, Luella Hilden and Dorthea (Walter) Pilkons; her cherished grandchildren, Robert (Emily) Burrus, Leo (Connie) Hilden, David Hilden, Holly (Angelo Panos) Hilden, Paula (Jimmy Valdez) Hilden, Tonyia (Evan) Cone and Jennifer (Ben) Klosterman; nine precious great-grandchildren; her dear sisters, Leona Keiser and Vera Noffzinger; and her dear brother, Leonard Kilpatrick.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 52 years, Leo; two sisters; and four brothers.

Visitation for Eunice will be held today, April 5, 2012, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Reverend Chad E. Hoover officiating. Burial will follow in Excelsior Township Cemetery.
