Dola S. Vaught

TRAVERSE CITY — Dola S. Vaught, 90, of Traverse City and formerly of Rochester Hills, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at Traverse Manor in Traverse City. Dola was born on Monday, May 8, 1922, to the late Amos and Edith (Coates) Sanders in Centralia, Ill.

Following her graduation from high school she continued her education for three years at Greenville College, transferring to the University of Illinois, where she earned her bachelor's degree. She eventually earned her master's degree from Oakland University.

On Dec. 21, 1945, in Ferndale, Dola married Dr. Paul M. Vaught. They eventually made their home in Rochester Hills, where she lived from 1961 until 2011 when she moved to Traverse City.

For many years Dola taught in the Highland Park and Ferndale Public Schools in various elementary positions.

She attended the Free Methodist Church and then began attending First Church of the Nazarene in 1996.

Dola loved to sing and read and enjoyed boating. Dola also enjoyed being with and helping people. She was very engaging and enjoyed the interaction with many, regardless of age.

Dola is survived by her sons, Robert (Linda), of Traverse City, and Gary, of Rochester Hills; her grandchildren, Paul (Jamie), of Kingsley, Robert Jr.(Amie), of Traverse City, Zachary Baker and fiancée, Melanie Petroskey, of Interlochen, and Michelle (Bill) Ayers, of Lake Ann; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, Troy (Rosemarie) Sanders, of Jacksonville, Ala., Everett (Jane) Sanders, of Greenville, Ill., and Norman (Vi) Sanders, of Baytown, Texas; sisters, Odessa Williamson, of Parma, and Orpha Barnes, of Prescott, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Dola was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Visitation for Dola will begin at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, followed by funeral services at 3:30 p.m., also at the funeral home. Pastor Nick Twomey will officiate. Further visitation will take place on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 3 until 8 p.m., at Potere-Modetz Funeral Home, 399 Walnut Blvd., Rochester, with funeral services taking place at noon Friday, Sept. 21, at First Church of the Nazarene, 1799 Walton Blvd., Rochester Hills. Pastor Larry Crum will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Arbor Cemetery, Spring Arbor.
