Charles S. McDowell

KEWADIN — Charles S. McDowell, 75, of Kewadin, died at Mike Conley Hospice in Clermont, Fla., on Dec. 8, 2011, following a short battle with cancer.

He was born in Lansing to the late Charles J. and Leona Miller McDowell. He graduated from Resurrection High School, Lansing, in 1953. Charles served in the U.S. Army Reserve and attained the rank of Captain. In 1957, he was united in marriage to Kay Conely, in Brighton.

Mr. McDowell graduated from Michigan State University, East Lansing, and received a BA in accounting and a MA in education. He also received a MA in banking from Rutgers School of Banking, New Jersey. Mr. McDowell enjoyed 54 years in the banking industry. His career highlights included F.D.I.C. examiner; vice-president of East Lansing State Bank; president and CEO of Northwestern State Bank; president of Michigan Independent Bankers Association; president of the Community Bankers of Michigan; Trust Department vice-president of Empire State Bank; trustee for Northern Michigan BIDCo Foundation; and chairman of the Ann Arbor-based University Bank and University Bancorp.

Charles was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids, where he sang in the choir. He served as president of East Lansing Lions Club; president of the Elk Rapids Rotary Club; and was an active volunteer for Father Fred Foundation and Grand Traverse Area Literacy Council in Traverse City.

Charles is survived by his wife, Kay; his daughters, Theresa Thomas and Mary Krueger (Schlax); seven grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Bissonette.

His daughter, Barbara Nelson, predeceased him.

Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Elk Rapids. Relatives and friends are welcome for visitation at 9 a.m. until the hour of services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established in his name for Father Fred Foundation, P.O. Box 2260, Traverse City, MI 49685; and Cornerstone Hospice, 2455 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home, Elk Rapids.
