Mardi Glass

ATLANTA, Ga. — Martha "Mardi" McKnight Glass passed away on Aug. 15, 2012, in Atlanta, Ga.

Mardi was born Feb. 20, 1944, in Tyler, Texas. She was a graduate of Arlington Heights High School, Arlington Heights, Ill., and Bradley University.

Following college Mardi taught middle school science in Chicago and later in Connecticut.

After moving to Atlanta in 1978 with her family, she became active in The Junior League of Atlanta and Pace Academy, where her sons attended school.

Mardi had a wonderful sense of humor and many friends. She also had a unique ability to connect and build friendships with people of all walks and ages, especially the younger generations. However, her favorite role always was being a mother to her two sons and later in life a grandmother.

She was married to her former husband, Frederick M. Glass Sr., of Traverse City, for 27 years.

Summers at the Neahtawanta Resort near Traverse City were special. Mardi managed to not miss a summer visit in 33 years until her health declined in 2005 and she was no longer able to make the annual trip north. Neahtawanta was always on her mind and held a special place in her heart. She cherished the many wonderful people and memories of the times she spent with her family and friends at "Neah".

She is survived by her two sons, Fred Glass Jr. (Elizabeth) and David Glass (Betsy), of Atlanta, Ga.; her sister, Mary Williams (Dave), of Houston, Texas; and four granddaughters, Merritt Ann, Kathleen, Darden and Anna Glass, all of whom lovingly knew her as GranMardi; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, James William "Bill" and Nadine Fenwick McKnight, of Illinois; as well as her beloved, yet neurotic, dog "Pepper".

A memorial service will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Ga., on Monday, Aug. 27, at 3 p.m. Family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church. A private interment will be held in Neahtawanta at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pace Academy/Aim High, 966 West Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta, GA 30327 or The Neahtawanta Legacy Fund, c/o Brit Eaton, 1465 Neahtawanta Road, Traverse City, MI 49686.
