Mary Lynn Philo

BOYNE FALLS — Mary Lynn Philo, 68, of Boyne Falls, died May 20. She was born in Edgerton, Wis., on March 15, 1944, to the Rev. Harry and Mary Lue (Bennett) Philo.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in special education from Western Michigan University and held teaching positions in Michigan and New York.

From her earliest years she possessed an exceptional singing voice, and with her bright, clear soprano she was often a soloist in school and church choirs, weddings and occasional recitals.

The joy she found in performing led her to New York City, where she studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Art. After 15 years in New York, she came to Traverse City to help care for her parents.

A self-described seeker, she had a lifelong interest in healing arts and all things spiritual.

In her last decades she worked often in retail, but she found that offering beauty in life was her true passion; she found great fulfillment in her last job, working at the Solace Spa in Boyne City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Ruth (Martenka).

She is survived by her brothers, Stephen and Thomas; as well as a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, at First Congregational Church, 6105 Center Road, Traverse City, MI 49686.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Women’s Resource Center for the Grand Traverse Area, 720 S. Elmwood Ave., Suite 2, Traverse City, MI 49686; (231) 941-1210; www.womensresourcecenter.org.
