EASTPORT — James "Larry" Tomlinson, 77, of Eastport, died Nov. 30, 2012, in Ann Arbor. He was born Sept. 12, 1935, the son of James E. and Ethel (Williams) Tomlinson.
Larry grew up spending his summers and vacations on the beaches of northwest Torch Lake, property that has been in the family over 100 years.
He played football at and was a graduate of Michigan Tech. He was instrumental in keeping the football program going at Michigan Tech and enjoyed watching many of their games.
Larry was involved with Boy Scouts of America at the regional and national level. He dedicated many volunteer hours to scouting as a Scout Leader, Master and on different councils. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA and an avid hunter.
Larry proudly served in the United States Air Force.
Local politics were another passion of Larry's. He was the former mayor of Grand Blanc and a current Torch Lake Township Trustee. After his retirement as an accident reconstruction engineer with General Motors he started his own business, Eastport Engineering, continuing on with his reconstruction expertise.
On Aug. 24, 1957, in Hancock, he married Marilyn Peterson, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jim Tomlinson, Mary Markham, Bob Tomlinson and Sue (Steve) Goslee; sister, Martha (Mike) McGuire; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren with one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Bobby Markham; and son-in-law, Bob Markham.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at 11 a.m., at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, with Pastors Gary Bekkering and Don Sinclair officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Torch Lake Twp. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., also at the funeral home.
