Charles Joseph Cauchy

FIFE LAKE --Charles was born on Feb. 2, 1918, in Mio, to the late Charles and Emma (Klimmek) Cauchy.

He moved to Alaska in 1936, joined the U.S. Army there when World War II broke out, and served as a Sergeant in the 13th Armored Division, 59th Infantry Battalion.

After the war he returned to Alaska to be a commercial fisherman. He came to live permanently in Fife Lake in 1978 after many years of being co-owner of a grocery store with his wife, Vernette, in Dundee.

While in Dundee Charles was active in the community as a member of the Optimist Club and the founder of the Dundee Youth Center.

In Fife Lake he spent many years getting to know people in the community, working behind the meat counter at Kimball's Store, being a hospice volunteer and bugling for services at the American Legion in Fife Lake, of which he was a founding member.

In addition to his great love of family, he loved gardening, playing musical instruments and staying knowledgeable about happenings in the world.

Charles is survived by his wife, Vernette; children, Charles (Marcia) Cauchy, of Traverse City, Mark (Geri) Cauchy, of Newport, Wash., Kim (Christine) Cauchy, of Canonsburg, Pa., Matt (Ellen) Cauchy, of Traverse City, and Maureen (Brooke), of Rockford; 13 grandchildren; and sister, Mary Ann (Howard) Heading, of Fife Lake.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Robert and Thomas; and his son, Robert (Peggy), of Kalamazoo.

The family would like to thank Munson Hospice, the doctors and nurses at Munson Medical Center, along with the personnel at Bortz for their loving care.

Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 16, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home in Kalkaska. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Aloysius Church in Fife Lake Friday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m. A church luncheon will take place at the American Legion Hall in Fife Lake following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Aloysius Catholic Church or Munson Hospice.
