Lucille L. (Vollmer) Glazier

BENZONIA — Lucille L. (Vollmer) Glazier, 82, of Benzonia, passed away July 7, 2012. She was born on Aug. 16, 1929, to William and Charlotte (Brenneke) Vollmer in Saginaw.

She graduated from Saginaw High School in 1947. She graduated from the University of Michigan with BA and MA degrees in education.

She taught elementary school in Ann Arbor for 13 years. During that period, 1964 to '65, she was a Fulbright Exchange Teacher in Wolverhamptom, England, teaching a class of 40 nine and 10-year-old students, as well as some interaction with the 12-year-old class which she was invited to join on their overnight hosteling trips in the beautiful surrounding English countryside. She had the opportunity to shake hands with the Queen Mother at a luncheon honoring the Exchange Teachers. She also viewed the Lying in State of Winston Churchill at West Minister Abbey. The morning of the funeral on the steps of St. Paul's Cathedral was the assembly of the world's dignitaries and the formal British pageantry. The entire year was an outstanding experience for her and presented many opportunities for her to travel to many parts of Great Britain and abroad.

Two summers, 1963 to '64, were spent at the University of Michigan Biological Station at Pellston in the position of Dean of Women. It greatly enhanced her love and knowledge of nature. The early morning bird trips with breakfast in the field were a favorite.

Lucille married Robert "Bob" Glazier in 1972 in Saginaw.

She taught one year in Saginaw, and the next year Bob was transferred to Cadillac with Michigan Bell. Lucille then taught in Cadillac at Forest View for 13 years and took an early retirement in 1986. That year she was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Cadillac Education Association. Lucille always loved her profession and felt blessed to have chosen it.

Upon retiring from teaching Lucille became involved with the Wonderland Humane Society in Cadillac and helped reorganize the society. She developed a Humane Education Program for the elementary grades in Cadillac and made yearly volunteer visits to all the classrooms at the elementary level with the general theme: Pet Responsibility and the Results of Irresponsibility. When she and Bob moved to Benzonia in 1991, she carried on with that program with the Benzie County Animal Welfare League until 2006.

Together, Lucille and Bob enjoyed traveling, boating, cross country skiing, biking, golfing gardening, lighthouses, bird watching and walking beaches; they were loyal fans of U of M football and the Detroit Tigers. Lucille also enjoyed playing Mahjong and creative activities. She had many interests.

Lucille was an active member of Trinity Lutheran in Frankfort, having taught Sunday School, serving on the church council and various committees. She was also instrumental in the organization and development of the Garden of Remembrance at Trinity. This was a particular love of her life. She felt that God was so close to one in a garden where a myriad of His miracles in creation were so abundant. As to its mystery, her favorite Bible verse (1Cor.13:12-13) explained that for her, "For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been understood."

Lucille was also a member of the BJ Chapter of P.E.O., POMH Auxiliary, Benzie County Animal Welfare League, Wonderland Humane Society, Cadillac, Friends of Pt. Betsie Lighthouse, Betsy Valley Trail and various animal welfare, education and conservation groups.

Lucille is survived by husband, Bob; nephew, Steve (Carmen) Schulz; grandnieces, Christine and Cynthia (Lulu) Schulz, of Austin, Texas; stepsons, Robert W. Glazier, of Midland, and David B. (Becky) Glazier, of Kawkawlin; step grandchildren, Gabrielle E. Glazier and Griffin David Glazier; sisters-in-law, Arlene (Everett) Maberry, Linda Jeffries, Alice Wilson, of Nevada, and Marie (Boyd) Rowden, of Bay City; and many dear friends. She also leaves behind her beloved feline friend, Ginger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William Vollmer; and sister, Jeannette Schulz.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 16, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Rick Stieve officiating. Interment will be in the Garden of Remembrance of Trinity Lutheran Church.
