ELK RAPIDS —
John Alexander Scott II, 74, of Elk Rapids, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 9, 2012, at his home with his wife, Linda, at his side.
John was born Wednesday, March 9, 1938, to the late Robert Hamilton and Sarah (Fairhead) Scott, in Cambridge, NY.
A veteran of the U. S. Army, John continued his education following his discharge, earning his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University.
On Friday, May 30, 1986, he married his friend, Linda Czarnecki, in a quiet ceremony.
Prior to his retirement, John's career was in property management and development. He had a love of boating and taught everyone in his family how to sail and enjoy the water. He was an avid MSU fan, an excellent cribbage player, and had a great love of classical music. He was an excellent cook and will be remembered for his grilling skills; Thanksgiving turkey with sausage dressing; and Prime Rib with Yorkshire pudding.
John served the community of Elk Rapids as the Commodore of the Elk Rapids Yacht Club; a member of the Elk Rapids Parks and Recreation Committee, which he helped institute; and the Zoning Board.
Surviving John is his wife, Linda; his children, Jeffrey Hamilton Scott, of Tucson, Ariz., Carolyn Harden, of Haslett, Robert McClellan (Christy) Scott, of Tucson; his step-daughters, Jennifer (Chad) Foster, of Toppenish, Wash., and Sarah McHugh, of Clarkston; his beloved grandchildren, Emma, Evan, Clara, Jaxson, Ian, Gracie, Audrey and Nora; sister, Susan Galbraith, of East Jordan; and brother, Phil Scott, of Kingsley; along with many nieces and nephews. He also treasured his best friend, Sabi.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert.
Visitation for friends and family will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday, June 15, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
A Celebration of John's Life will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at the funeral home.
As John loved to sail and to teach others to sail, the family would suggest any memorial contributions in his name be directed to Traverse Area Community Sailing, so that children can learn how to sail; www.tacsailing.com.
Please share your thoughts and memories with John's family by way of his online guestbook at www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com.
The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
