WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — George T. Schilling, of West Lafayette, Ind., a longtime summer resident of Glen Lake, died Jan. 25, 2012, at Indiana University Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Ind. at the age of 92.
He was born March 6, 1919, in Bloomington, Ind., and attended grade school in Detroit and high school at Kentucky Military Institute, graduating in 1936. He received his bachelor's degree from Indiana University in 1940, a Juris Doctor with Distinction degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1943 and a master's degree from Purdue University in 1975.
He married Barbara White, of Kingsport, Tenn., in 1942. Her parents were James C. White and Vera Wynkoop White, both originally from Leelanau and Benzie counties.
After his military service of three years during World War II, Mr. Schilling practiced law with the firm of Stuart and Branigin in Lafayette, Ind., until he retired in 1979, and he and his wife moved to Glen Lake. His legal practice included litigation, corporate work and 27 years as legal counsel for Purdue University.
From the age of nine, and except for the period of his military service, he spent his summer vacations at Glen Lake, enjoying golf, tennis, photography, boating and fishing. He and his wife were members of the Great Lakes Cruising Club.
Active in many community organizations, he served as a member of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore Advisory Commission and as president and director of the Citizens Council, a director and officer of the Glen Lake Association, the Glen Lake Yacht Club, Friends of the Glen Lake Library and as a trustee of the Leelanau Center of Education.
His daughter, Martha Vera Schilling, predeceased him.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara White Schilling, of West Lafayette Ind.; his daughter, Carolyn S. Gery (husband, Michael), of West Lafayette, Ind.; a son, George White Schilling, of Kingsley; a brother, Richard J. Schilling, of Glen Arbor; two grandchildren, Michael Schilling Gery and Kate White Schilling, of Indianapolis, Ind.; step grandsons, Jeffrey V. Gery, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Douglas P. Gery, of Nashville, Tenn.
A celebration of his life will be at University Place, 1700 Lindberg Road, on Feb. 4, 2012, at 1:30 p.m.
