Howard James Mampe

TRAVERSE CITY — Howard James Mampe, age 88, of Traverse City, passed away Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, at Concord Place. He was born Nov. 11, 1923, in Evanston, Ill., to Herman and Elizabeth (Neakrans) Mampe.

He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II.

On Sept. 27, 1947, Howard married Lois Klongland at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, Wis.

He moved to Grayslake, Ill., from Evanston in 1955 and worked as a plumber for over 40 years in the Grayslake area.

He and Lois were very active in the Lion's Club. Howard moved to Traverse City in 1996.

He will be greatly missed by son, Robert (Kris) Mampe, of Traverse City; daughters, Elizabeth (John) Opitz, of Door County, Wis., and Kristin (Stewart) Nagao, of Grayslake, Ill.; grandchildren, Nikkole and Robert Mampe, Joshua (Tiffany) and Elli Opitz, Katie (Cory) Kelso and Adam Nagao; and great-granddaughter, Shayla Opitz.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife in 1991 and two brothers.

A memorial service is being planned for June 9, 2012, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City.
