Grayce Marie Nye

FRANKFORT — Grayce Marie Nye, 90, of Frankfort, died July 11, 2012.

She was born the daughter of David and Jenny (Bloom) Edwards. Grayce married Claire M. Nye on Oct. 7, 1939.

In 1946, not wanting to raise their family in the city, Grayce and Claire moved with four young children from Detroit to a 40-acre farm near Frankfort. This was Grayce's first introduction to Northern Michigan, and she quickly adapted from city girl to country living. She always had the basement shelves stocked with home canned goods that were grown on their land, and she learned to cook any and all fish and game the boys brought home. Grayce could always be found in the kitchen baking for her family and all of their friends. She always opened her home to anyone who needed a place to stay.

Despite raising eight children of their own, Grayce always had room and time for her nieces and nephews who liked to come and spend the summer "up north".

Family was very important to Grayce, and her family was able to honor her wish to remain at home over the past year-and-a-half as her health failed. This would not have been possible without the help and loving care of two of her very special grandchildren, Lisa Walton and Neal Boynton.

Grayce was a friend to everyone. She was a very special lady as a mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and neighbor. She has left us with many good memories.

She is survived by children, David (Jean) Nye, Ray (Sandy) Nye, Cynthia Poyner, Tom (Pat) Nye, Jim Nye and Gretchen (Jim) Parkhurst; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brother, Bob (Terry) Edwards; and brother-in-law, David Moross.

She was preceded in death by her children, Claire Jr., Sharon Kluzak and Joyce Nye; siblings, Ken (Marion) Edwards, Norman (Arnita) Edwards, Tom (Virginia) Edwards, David (Jean) Edwards, Charlotte (Cliff) Copeland and Leona Moross.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at the Elberta United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Barb Fay officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Contributions may be made to the church.

Arrangements are by Jowett Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Frankfort and Benzonia.
