Editorial: GT board takes leap forward

The Grand Traverse County board of commissioners has officially entered the 20th Century; let’s see how long it takes to make it to the 21st.

The board recently approved the purchase of a set of iPads for use by commissioners as part of an effort to go paperless and, hopefully, better communicate with constituents.

County Administrator Dave Benda said the gadgets should help board members “get more technologically adept.” He’s right. The $4,200 the county will spend should be worth it if it helps commissioners get more information faster and more accurately and dump the paper.

This is a big step for a board that in 2007 tied global warming to socialism and pointed out that the last ice age didn’t end because dinosaurs were driving expensive foreign cars.

Commissioner Christine Maxbauer said iPads will make board members more effective and efficient. She said other county boards and departments should move in a similar direction.
