Editorial: Smokers, trash your butts

Some Northwestern Michigan College students are hoping that giving smokers trash receptacles decorated with nature scenes will make them more likely to trash their butts than throw them on the beach.

Given that smokers have proven through the millennia that they are genetically incapable of properly disposing of their cigarette butts, we wish the students luck.

The students got the Department of Natural Resources to place the receptacles at the Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park beach.

Students kicked in for the materials and students from an after-school art class at Traverse City High School did the decorating.

Let's hope they can do what no one else has seemed able to do — get smokers off their butts about butts.
