As the newest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, President Barack Obama has a task no other winner has faced: figuring out how to respond gracefully to an enormous honor given embarrassingly prematurely. ...

The adulation with which much of the world has greeted the new president has fueled those critics who paint him as vain and insubstantial. Now, he has to explain why he, who has spoken eloquently of international cooperation and hope for the future but has had little time to achieve any concrete improvements, has won the world's most prestigious accolade ahead of others who have toiled for years, risking their lives to bring peace, justice and freedom to the world's bleakest corners. ...

Millions of Americans share the Nobel committee's high hopes that Obama's collaborative approach to the world will repair the nation's international standing

Our view: Aviation program working

Back in 2004 Northwestern Michigan College was facing tight budgets while also trying to justify why taxpayers were subsidizing two high-profile but high-priced programs — aviation and the maritime academy. Now, the aviation program is luring students from China, Great Britain and India and expects more.

Jack Lessenberry: State's prison problem

Someone once said society needed to decide whether it could afford to lock up those it was mad at, or just those we are legitimately afraid of. What seems bizarre is that given Michigan's financial situation, its leaders seem unwilling to make the rational choice.

Another view: Job Corps for vets

Numbers show economic gains; more is yet to be done

By the numbers, there is some reason to hope Michigan is slowly nosing its way out of the recession that has gripped the state for a decade now. But they also show that children and low-income families remain at risk.

Michigan is currently ranked in the top 10 worst places to live for children with autism. Today, the best option for families to get help is to move out of state, where autism is covered by insurance.

Our view: Battle of Acme may be over

The Battle of Acme is apparently nearing an end, and after six years or so of wrangling over Meijer Inc.'s plans for a big-box store along M-72, both sides appear ready to move on with getting a store built, local residents hired and the doors open.

Jack Segal: Ending the war in Afghanistan

In November 2010, the President and our allies agreed to continue fighting in Afghanistan through the end of 2014. In a surprise announcement Feb. 1, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters that the United States has now decided to end our combat role by "mid-to-late 2013." Thereafter, NATO troops will remain in a "training and advisory role" as Afghans take full responsibility for security.
