Suddenly the quagmire known as Afghanistan is slightly less hopeless. For that, thank the perseverance of the rather unlikely diplomat Sen. John Kerry and the stubborn Afghan President Hamid Karzai's bow to reality -- in that order, too.

Mr. Karzai emerged from five days of high-pressure talks with Mr. Kerry on Tuesday to accept that he now has to compete in a run-off election next month. ...

It's a notable victory, though, for Mr. Kerry. The past five years have had him lose the bitterly close 2004 presidential election after deciding not to formally challenge the contested results in Ohio ... and see the job of secretary of state that he coveted in the Obama administration go instead to Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"We may have just averted a crisis of government in Afghanistan. This may be the biggest thing that Kerry has done, other than run for president," says Ralph Carter, a professor at Texas Christian University ...

Our view: Aviation program working

Back in 2004 Northwestern Michigan College was facing tight budgets while also trying to justify why taxpayers were subsidizing two high-profile but high-priced programs — aviation and the maritime academy. Now, the aviation program is luring students from China, Great Britain and India and expects more.

Jack Lessenberry: State's prison problem

Numbers show economic gains; more is yet to be done

By the numbers, there is some reason to hope Michigan is slowly nosing its way out of the recession that has gripped the state for a decade now. But they also show that children and low-income families remain at risk.

The Battle of Acme is apparently nearing an end, and after six years or so of wrangling over Meijer Inc.'s plans for a big-box store along M-72, both sides appear ready to move on with getting a store built, local residents hired and the doors open.

Jack Segal: Ending the war in Afghanistan

In November 2010, the President and our allies agreed to continue fighting in Afghanistan through the end of 2014. In a surprise announcement Feb. 1, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters that the United States has now decided to end our combat role by "mid-to-late 2013." Thereafter, NATO troops will remain in a "training and advisory role" as Afghans take full responsibility for security.
