Editorial: Glass sets new standard

It's the stuff of legend.

The Penn State women's volleyball team, led by Leland's Alisha Glass, made history with almost every game over the past two years.

On Dec. 19, they pushed the bar even higher.

Three straight national championships. One hundred two straight wins. One thousand and one wins for coach Russ Rose. A winning streak that goes back to September 2007. The second-longest winning streak ever in Division I team sports, second only to the 137 straight the University of Miami's tennis program racked up from 1957 to 1964.

In the end, it took Penn State five sets to overcome No. 2 Texas after falling behind by two sets to start the match.

Penn State -- behind Glass' astounding 53 assists, 12 digs, two kills and four blocks -- won what some called the greatest women's volleyball championship match ever, 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 15-13.

For Glass, a senior, the Olympics may be next. But after the game, she was all about the moment and the years of work she put in as a high school star and then an All-American at Penn State: "This was our goal at the beginning of the season. And I think you saw that in the match. We did just not want to let it go," Glass said. "We came here and we got what we wanted."
