Other View: Political orthodoxy police

Such is the state of politics in America today that a Michigan congressman trusted by Republican leaders to represent the party on the debt-reduction “super committee” and deemed loyal enough to chair an important House committee is being targeted by a major political action committee for being too liberal.

That’s the situation facing U.S. Rep. Fred Upon, R-St. Joseph ... The Washington, D.C.-based Club for Growth said recently it would mount an ad campaign against Upton for his “very liberal record.” Granted, Upton has been known for most of his career as a moderate ... but he’s strongly asserted conservative principles since joining the House GOP leadership. ...

Attempts like this to impose ideological uniformity on elected officials amount to an attack on independent thinking in our political system.
