Legal milestone awarded

GAYLORD — The State Bar of Michigan will recognize the landmark agreement over oil and gas drilling in the Pigeon River Country Forest with its 35th Legal Milestone award.

"Elk, Oil and the Environment" will highlight the decade-long dispute in the 1970s over drilling in the 91,000-acre forest, the site of a legal battle between state government, environmental groups and the oil and gas industry.

The case of West Michigan Environmental Action Group versus the state Natural Resources Commission went to the state Supreme Court.

It led to an agreement between the parties that allowed regulated drilling in the southern third of the forest, tapping the property's oil and gas reserves while allowing the forest's elk herd to grow.

"It not only set standards for oil drilling in Michigan, but it became a national and international model for resource management," said state Bar President Charles Toy.

He will co-host a dedication ceremony on June 9 at noon at Treetops Resort's Wilderness Cabin east of Gaylord, and a bronze plaque will be installed outside the Otsego County Courthouse at 225 W. Main St. in Gaylord.

Other speakers will include Ken Glass, chairman of the Pigeon River Advisory Council, and representatives of the West Michigan Environmental Action Council and the oil and gas industry.
