GAYLORD -- A beat-up Traverse City West team found a way to win Friday.
The Titans -- missing several key contributors with injuries -- rang up a 28-6 win in Gaylord's homecoming game.
Starting tailback Jay Meyers was out with a hamstring pull, defensive end Craig Wilson sat with a hip injury and offensive lineman Blake Goodell learned on game day that his season may be over because of a broken foot he had been playing on all season. Starting safety Anthony West hurt his MCL during the game, although the severity of the injury wasn't known, coach Tim Wooer said.
"I've got more gray hairs this week than any other in my career," said Wooer, who had to juggle his lineup to account for all the injuries to key seniors. "You're calling plays and you have to look on the field and see who you have out there and what plays they know."
Anthony West moved into the backfield and scored the Titans' first touchdown of the day on a 13-yard run that put TC West up 7-6 after Keenan Sanford's extra point.
Linebacker Morgan Tolle also moved over to play on offense and scored on a 5-yard TD run with 4:20 left in the third quarter.
Josh Klingelsmith's 2-yard touchdown run was set up by an Anthony West 18-yard punt return into Gaylord territory.
Zach Tucker added a fourth-quarter TD run to finish off the scoring.
Gaylord opened the game's scoring with a touchdown pass from Jake Cuca to Jesse Armstrong.
Sanford kicked two PATs and Tucker caught a conversion pass from Brett Kenny, who was 5-for-11 passing for 128 yards. Klingelsmith caught two of those passes for 87 yards and ran for 58 more on 10 carries. Cody Scheuerman led the Titans (2-3, 1-1 Big North Conference) with 92 rushing yards on 13 attempts as TC West racked up 216 yards on the ground.
Gaylord falls to 0-5 on the season. The Blue Devils, converting to the single-wing offense, have scored only 28 points in four games this season.
