FREDERIC -- State officials will spend nearly $1 million to clean up scrap tires across Michigan.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment awarded $967,152 in grants to remove and properly dispose of scrap tires, efforts to reduce potential public health and environmental concerns.
Ronald Fisk, of Gaylord, is among the grant recipients.
Fisk bought property in Crawford County's Frederic Township he intends to turn into a scrap yard. First he wants to remove heaps of old tires from the spot, he said.
State officials awarded Fisk a $63,000 grant to clean up his land.
The DNRE also will spend $3,992 to clean up old tires in the Cadillac area, reports show.
Grant recipients have until Aug. 31 to complete the work.
