The exhibits opened Sunday and runs through March 3 as part of "Embrace the Dream," a series of local events that celebrate Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 21.
- To the nonprofit Land Information Access Association, the City Opera House and others for organizing the Miriam Pico Picnic at the Opera House variety show, a series of six noon-hour lunches in the Opera House's upstairs lobby to benefit area nonprofits. Singer and musician Pico and guests volunteer their time; the show is aired simultaneously on UpNorthTV cable channels 97 & 992, which also rebroadcasts the performances. Admission is free. The studio audience can bring their own lunches and are asked for donations.
- To MaryLee Pakieser, a nurse practitioner at the Traverse City Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic, for receiving the 2013 State Award for Excellence from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Pakieser, 61, has been a registered nurse since 1972 and a nurse practitioner since 1995
- To the Michigan Land Use Institute for presenting a Saving Seeds from the Garden/ Farm Workshop and a seed exchange last Saturday at Grow Benzie on M-115. The workshop was to guide participants through harvesting and storing seeds. Table space was provided for participants to sell, trade or give away seeds.
- To Grand Traverse County emergency management coordinator Daniel Scott, who retired after more than 30 years as a county employee. Scott, 65, officially retired Jan. 4. He started as a sheriff's deputy in 1974. He later served as a sergeant, then director of central dispatch services. He became the county's emergency management coordinator in 1995. He retired in 2000 but returned to his old post in 2008 for what he thought would be a one-year period.
- To Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors, which is getting ready to launch a major renovation on its flagship offices at 402 E. Front St. President Mike Schmidt said the project, expected to cost between $700,000 and $1 million, will increase square footage from about 8,000 to 10,000 and give the building an updated facade.
- To the organizers of guided snowshoe hikes that will be offered at Michigan Legacy Art Park at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville. Hikes start at 2:30 p.m. Sundays, Jan. 20 and 27, and Feb. 3 and 10. The cost is $10 for adults and free for children 17 and younger with a paying adult. Guests should bring their own snowshoes; rentals are available at the resort.
