-- To longtime Suttons Bay businessman and civic leader Owen Bahle, 92, who died Sept 7. Bahle, great-grandson of Norwegian pioneer Lars Bahle, who arrived in 1868, was a founding member of the Suttons Bay Rotary Club in 1946, ran the family store for years and also served, at various times, as village president, fire chief and Chamber of Commerce president. He renovated The Bay movie theater and was a supporter of the Suttons Bay-Bingham Fund, the Leelanau (TART) Trail, the Sugar Loaf Ski Club and village marina. He and Leila, his wife of 65 years who survives, had five children.
-- To all area communities and residents who participated in 9/11 memorial services last week to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Area Boy Scouts marked the 11th anniversary with a sun-up to sun-down perpetual salute at the Grand Traverse 911 Memorial Park, where the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department hosted a morning memorial ceremony.
-- To the family and friends of Matthew Noble Marker who organized Sunday's Subaru road rally in Elk Rapids to honor the SubaRoots rally driver killed 16 months ago in an accident during the Olympus Rally in Washington. Marker, a 1998 Elk Rapids High School graduate, would have turned 33 Sunday. Organizers hoped to break the Guinness World Record of 339 cars for the longest parade of Subarus. More than 477 people from across the state and country had pledged to participate last week. Marker was the son of Michelle and Don Marker, of Elk Rapids.
-- To Constitution Celebration founders Heather Cereone and Jody Ferris for organizing the second annual event that was to be held Sunday at the Williamsburg Dinner Theater in honor of the 1787 signing of the nation's founding document. The event included patriotic songs, a Patriot Idol competition, a fundraising Founding Mothers and Fathers Dinner, an art logo contest as well as an antique and modern car show.
-- To artist, musician and educator Tom Kaufmann, who turned an underground storage tank, wrenches, steel beams and granite countertops into a 2.5-ton music box that can play a two-octave chromatic scale and play 32-measure songs. He will present his creation in ArtPrize Grand Rapids, which starts Wednesday and runs through Oct. 7.
-- To organizers and participants in the invasive species removal at Hickory Meadows in Traverse City last week. The Grand Traverse Conservation District will host another work bee Tuesday at the Grand Traverse Natural Education Reserve.
