n To Ed Downing on his second retirement Oct. 1. Downing retired as president of Interlochen Center for the Arts in 2003. Four years later, he agreed to take on a temporary, three-month commitment as executive director of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra. Downing decided to step down Oct. 1, just a month short of five years.
n To organizers of the inaugural T.C. Patriot Game that was to be held Friday night between Traverse City Central and Traverse City West Senior High schools to honor 13 northern Michigan soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines who died serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The list includes U.S. Air Force T/Sgt. Matthew Schwartz, who attended Traverse City Central; and Army Sgt. Dillon Foxx, who attended West. Pre-game activities included an honor guard, presentation of giant American flag and the reading of each soldier's name.
n To Kalkaska village manager Penny Hill, village president Jeff Sieting, businessman Mark Avery and other supportive community members working on a long-term strategy for economic growth and revitalization of Kalkaska's downtown. The village has obtained nearly $70,000 in grants for the project through the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, Rotary Charities, the Traverse Bay Economic Development Corporation, the Land Information Access Association and the Kalkaska Downtown Development Authority.
n To Dennos Museum on its two new exhibits that opened Friday. One focuses on Chinese multi-disciplinary artist Miao Xiaochun, whose recent work combines paintings of Western art history into digital video projections of computer models. The other exhibit features 30 small public outdoor sculptures by Marshall K. Fredericks, a Michigan designer and sculptor. He is best-known in northern Michigan for the Cross in the Woods at Indian River and his Two Bears in front of the Corson Auditorium at Interlochen Center for the Arts. Fredericks died in 1998.
n To the Cherry Capital Men's Chorus for its benefit concert Sunday at Central United Methodist Church for the Safe Harbor outreach program.
n To Northwestern Michigan Bank for sponsoring a state historical marker for the Hannah & Lay building downtown. Northwestern has owned the building since 2009.
n To the Grand Traverse Dyslexia Association for annually providing specialized education and tutoring to about 150 area students with dyslexia.
n To the Grand Traverse County sheriff's department and the Traverse City Police department for hosting the semi-annual "National Drug Take Back Day" on Saturday. Officers were to accept unwanted or unused prescription drugs for proper disposal.
