Photo Story: Knife sharpener keeps the edge
Passersby give strange looks to the white, unmarked van parked at a meter with its side door open, a loud, grinding noise emitting from the interior. That's where Tony Valerio sharpens knives and shears for chefs and hair stylists. Valerio left a job in insurance to start his business and, as he put it, escape the shackles of a desk and meet new people.

He's the first to feel a drop of rain or flinch at blustery northern winds. Blissfield resident Neil Sauter teeters 8 feet, 8 inches above the ground, and come rain or shine he is a temporary nomad. Sauter, 25, covers nearly 20 miles a day on 3-foot-high aluminum drywall stilts.

Memorial Day: No Memory, No Meaning
The Memorial Day ceremony at the Leelanau Township Cemetery featured patriotic music, a history of the Gulf War and a flag ceremony with local Scout troops. At least 200 people gathered to honor veterans from a number of wars and nearly all branches of the military, among numerous community observances held around the region.
