The state flag is placed on the casket of Michigan State Trooper Blair DuVall by his partner, Trooper Rick Doehring during funeral services Friday at Benzie Central High School. The 44 year-old died of cancer July 7 in his home.

JoAnn DuVall, widow of Michigan State Trooper Blair DuVall is comforted by 1st Lt. Pat Richard following the funeral services. Approximately 650 friends, family, co-workers and representatives from numerous area police departments attended the service to remember the 20 year-veteran.

Photo Story: Horseplay is hard work

Hard work is something that Traverse City resident Mariola Power, 20, is used to. She worked tirelessly for good grades at the University of Michigan and as a reward her father purchased her a horse. Now, she is working hard with her horse as she competes in shows around the country.

Passersby give strange looks to the white, unmarked van parked at a meter with its side door open, a loud, grinding noise emitting from the interior. That's where Tony Valerio sharpens knives and shears for chefs and hair stylists. Valerio left a job in insurance to start his business and, as he put it, escape the shackles of a desk and meet new people.

Photo Story: Man crosses Michigan on stilts

He's the first to feel a drop of rain or flinch at blustery northern winds. Blissfield resident Neil Sauter teeters 8 feet, 8 inches above the ground, and come rain or shine he is a temporary nomad. Sauter, 25, covers nearly 20 miles a day on 3-foot-high aluminum drywall stilts.

Memorial Day: No Memory, No Meaning

The Memorial Day ceremony at the Leelanau Township Cemetery featured patriotic music, a history of the Gulf War and a flag ceremony with local Scout troops. At least 200 people gathered to honor veterans from a number of wars and nearly all branches of the military, among numerous community observances held around the region.

Photo Story: School Ship starts 20th season

Crew members for the schooner Inland Seas spent time last week preparing for the upcoming season. The ship is one of three used for the Inland Seas Education Center's Schoolship and other educational programs, and takes students and adults on excursions for hands-on lessons about the science above and below the waters of Grand Traverse Bay and the Great Lakes.
