Central girls win BNC ski title

Petoskey and Cadillac split boys crown

BELLAIRE — Traverse City Central's girls took first at the final Big North Conference ski meet Tuesday at Schuss Mountain and claimed the league title.

The Trojans won with 40 points, followed by TC West (59), Petoskey (63) and Cadillac (129).

"The girls really skied well as a team and individually," Central coach Jerry Stanek said. "We were only one point ahead after the slalom. We pretty much won the race with our GS. That's what we've been doing all year."

In the GS, the Trojans took four of the top six spots. Shannon Weaver won in 51.47, Cassidy Klein was third (52.34), Paige Pfannenstiel was fifth (52.72) and Cecily Olsen was sixth (53.34). Weaver was third in the slalom (1:10.94), Klein was fifth (1:12.37), Olsen was eighth (1:13.15) and Devon Dotterrer was ninth (1:23.28).

West's Lili Lockwood was second in the slalom (1:10.6), Elle Rivard was sixth (1:12.6), Monica Hessler was seventh (1:23.64) and Morgan Culp was 11th (1:16.23). In the GS, Lockwood was second (52.04), Hessler was seventh (53.36), Culp was ninth (54.65) and Mary Mikko was 15th (56.83).

In the boys meet, Petoskey won with 39 points, to tie Cadillac (75) for the BNC title. West was third with 84 points and Central was fourth with 85.

TC West's Ryan Ness won the giant slalom (47.79) while Finley Clark was fifth (49.37), Matt Lowe was 15th (50.57) and Alex Podges was 17th (51.22). Ness was second in the slalom (1:02.09), Lowe was eighth (1:05.27), Podges was 16th (1:08.91) and Ben Friar was 20th (1:15.56).

For TC Central, Kalvis Hornburg was third in the slalom (1:02.23), Kurt Frick was 10th (1:06.56), Jacob Gerstner was 14th (1:07.83) and Nate Mikulski was 15th (1:08.27). Frick was seventh in the GS (49.81), Hornburg was eighth (49.82), Max Collins was 12th (50.23) and Nate Mikulski was 16th (50.64).

Petoskey's Gunner Lundteigen won the boys' slalom champion in 1:02.01. Teammate Noah Honaker was fourth in 1:04.06.

Teams now will look to the state finals on Monday at Nub's Nob.
