Trojans net district soccer title

TRAVERSE CITY — For the first time since 1995, Traverse City Central is a district champion in boys soccer.

The Trojans ended the drought on Saturday with a 1-0 home win over Midland in the Division 1 district final.

"To finally put a banner up in the gym, which has been a goal of ours for a long time, is really nice," TC Central coach Rob Boynton said. "The boys get a lot of credit for all of their hard work. We came together as a team."

TC Central (14-5-5) moves on to play Walled Lake Central at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Midland in the regional semifinal.

Reilly deTar scored the winning goal with 49.2 seconds left in the first half on an Adam Stepan assist.

"Adam attacked the goalie and had a shot on goal," Boynton said. "He drew all the defenders to him, so he took a shot and Reilly got the deflection and scored on a one-touch. He had a very composed, poised finish in the foul box."

For the third straight playoff game, Colin Lesoski posted a shutout in net with five saves.

"Colin did a great job," Boynton said. "Kalvis Hornburg, Jacob Muessig, Kurt Frick and Mitchell Ward all did a really good job (on defense) not letting the attackers get behind them. They had 4-5 shots, but they were all from a way out."

Taylor Cook and Noah Mitchell Ward also had big games for TC Central in the midfield.

Midland finished the season 17-3-2. Two of those losses were to TC Central.
