Prep Roundup: Lakers win jamboree

Michael O'Brien shoots 39 to lead Glen Lake golfers

MESICK — It's a two-team race.

Michael O'Brien shot a 39 to earn medalist honors Wednesday as Glen Lake won the second Northwest Conference golf jamboree of the spring.

The Lakers shot a 164 to beat Suttons Bay by 10 strokes at The Briar. The Norsemen won the first jamboree by a stroke over Glen Lake.

Matt O'Brien carded a 40, Matt Abramson 42 and Collin Richard 43 for the Lakers. Conor Loberg checked in with a 40, Chase Palmer and Sean Lammy 44 and Eric Chapman 46 for Suttons Bay.

Benzie Central, led by Hunter Brian's 42, finished third at 191. Jordan O'Connel's 46 sparked Frankfort to a fourth-place finish at 196. Mesick came in at 206 as Alex Spencer shot 45. Kingsley was sixth at 210. Andrew Tallman paced the Stags with a 47.

GOLF

TC St. Francis wins Lake Michigan meet

Traverse City St. Francis came back to win the second Lake Michigan Conference meet of the season, two days after finishing second behind Grayling in the year's first league match.

The Gladiators were led by Mike Bork's meet-best 37. They won with a team score of 175 at Boyne Mountain. Kalkaska was second at 194 and Elk Rapids third with 195.

The Glads' other top scorers were Evan Miller (41), Colter Hornyak (46) and Luke Popp (51).

Elk Rapids' John Groesser was also a medalist with a 40, and Miller was the meet's third medalist.

The season's third LMC meet is on tap for Monday at Boyne Highlands, hosted by Harbor Springs.

TENNIS

TC Central B      6 TC Christian      2

Traverse City Central's varsity B team improved to 2-0 in duals this season with a 6-2 win over Traverse City Christian.

The Trojans won three singles and three doubles matches, getting singles wins from Kelly Krueger (6-0, 6-2), Emma Schilkey (6-2, 6-1) and Kelsey White (6-0, 6-1), and doubles wins by Katie Raymond/Leah Potter (6-1, 7-5), Nadine Tueck/Talia Gerstle (6-0, 6-1) and Alli Prentice/Savannah Micunek (6-0, 6-0).

Alisha Bultsma rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 singles win for the Sabres, while Katie VanVreede/Callie Kostrzewa (6-4, 6-4) posted a doubles victory.

SOFTBALL

Glen Lake     12 Manistee CC     7

Mariah Sobczak had two hits and drove in three runs as Glen Lake beat Manistee Catholic 12-7 in a non-conference game.

Clara Ellis belted a two-home run for the Lakers (2-5). Kaley Pleva struck out nine to earn the win.

East Jordan     18     16 Ellsworth      3     1

East Jordan improved to 8-1 with an 18-3 and 16-1 sweep of Ellsworth.

Val Peters was the winning pitcher in both games. She threw a one-hitter in the nightcap.

In the opener, Morgan Skop had three hits and four RBIs. Shaina Peters added two hits and three RBIs, Megan Keyser two hits and two RBIs and Val Peters two hits.

In the nightcap, Shaina Peters collected two hits and three RBIs. Monica Capelin drove in two runs. Michelle Finley chipped in two hits.

TC West frosh      23 22 Elk Rapids JV      4 6

Traverse City West's Kloie Sanchez hit an over-the-fence home run and three triples to lead Traverse City West's freshmen to a 23-4 opening-game victory over Elk Rapids' JVs.

The Titans would go on to sweep the twinbill with a 22-6 nightcap win, as Sanchez struck out five.

Molly Longton fanned three to pick up the win in the opener.

Glen Lake     10      2 Manistee CC      7     12

Adam Scarbrough collected two hits and knocked in two runs as Glen Lake topped Manistee Catholic 10-7 in the first of two games.

Winning pitcher Michael Sawyer and Simon Kohler also had a pair of hits for the Lakers (5-3).

Manistee Catholic won the nightcap, 12-2.

Logan Popp scored three goals and assisted on a fourth as Glen Lake beat Kalkaska 5-0.

Jordan Lewis tallied twice for the Lakers (5-0-1). Kira Surber assisted on two of Popp's goals. Sophie Ewing was in goal for Glen Lake.

Benzie Central dropped to 0-4 after a 4-2 loss to Mason County Eastern.

Olivia Addis netted both goals for the Huskies. Ashley Oakley and Taylor Nugent drew the assists.

TRACK

TC West wins JV meet at Harbor Springs

Dan Montgomery and Zach Shafer each won three events as Traverse City West won the 10-team Harbor Springs Kiwanis Invitational for 9th and 10th graders.

Montgomery was part of all three winning relays teams for the Titans — the 400, 800 and 1,600.

Shafer won the 200 in 23.67 seconds and was also on the 400 relay team with Reese Spaulding, Chris Cerk and Montgomery and the 800 relay squad with Cerk, Dan Montgomery and Brandon Montgomery.

The 1,600 relay team consisted of Dan Montgomery, Brandon Montgomery, Tyler Johnson and Fred Chekhovskiy.

Griffin Forrester won the 300 hurdles in 46.8 and Johnson claimed the 400 in 56.46.

West finished second in the girls meet with 88 points. Sault Ste. Marie was first with 99.

For the Titans, Clancey Hawke won the 3200 (13:02.2) and teamed with Rachael Favela, Marcy Marek and Casey Mutter to take the 3200 relay (10:51.8). Shelby Drzewiecki captured the 300 hurdles (55.87).

Marek placed second in the 800 (2:34.9) while Favela was second in the 1600 (5:41.9).

Haven Thomack and Chrissy Cypher went 2-3 in the pole vault (7'6" and 6'6").

Eagles, Warriors win

BELLAIRE — Lindsey Winslow won the 100 hurdles (18.0), Emily Kwekel the 1600 (1:00.0) and Katie Odom the 3200 (14:20.97) to help Bellaire capture an eight-team track meet at Bellaire.

The Eagles finished with 136 points.

Winslow and Odom also ran legs on the victorious 800 relay (2:04.31)

Marissa Ingersoll led Forest Area. She won the 100 (13.18), 200 (29.0), 400 (1:07.27). Ingersoll and anchored the winning 400 relay (55.34). Katie Johnson claimed the 300 hurdles (52.73).

Mancelona's Jenna Davis posted wins in the high jump (4'7") and pole vault (7'6").

Central Lake's Jasmine Hines swept the discus (89'0) and shot put (37'8.5"). Teammate Sarah Eklund captured the long jump (12'8").

Gaylord St. Mary's Nicole Blanzy took the 800 (2:45.65) and ran the anchor on the winning 1600 relay (4:52.06).

Forest Area won the boys meet with 138 points.

For Forest Area, Matt Park won the shot put (39'7"), Jermaine Nix the long jump (17'8.5") and Scott Munsell the 800 (2:19.84). Munsell and Nix were also on the winning 1600 relay (3:56.94).

Mancelona picked up wins from Corey Lowers in the pole vault (9'6"), Josh Kolasa in the high jump (5'4"), Cody Aldrich in the discus (110'7.5"), Michael Dalton in the hurdles (17.62 and 44.7).

Central Lake's Jordan Becker won the 1600 (5:05.51) and 3200 (11:00.28). The Trojans took the 3200 (9:39.38) and 800 (1:43.63) relays.

Gaylord St. Mary's Clay Becker captured the 100 (11.41) and 400 (55.15).
