Roundup: Frankfort repeats as regional champs

Bellaire moves on to softball quarterfinals

FRANKFORT — The run continues for Frankfort baseball.

The Panthers won their fifth straight regional title Saturday with a 9-3 victory over Glen Lake in the Division 4 finale.

Frankfort (19-19) will move on to Tuesday's quarterfinal at TC West.

In the championship game, Nolan Nye pitched the win with six strikeouts and one earned run. Every Panther starter had at least one hit as Talon Bigley had two and Nolan Nye doubled.

Glen Lake (26-12) stranded 13 runners in the championship game. Thomas Waning had three hits while Dylan Wendels, Austin Odziana and Andrew Gutzka had two hits.

In the first game, Frankfort beat Bellaire 8-7 in eight innings. With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, sophomore Logan Pirchard collected his first varsity hit when he drove in Brennan Flynn to win the game.

R.J. Kennis picked up the win in relief with five strikeouts, Nye was 2-for-2 with a double, a homer and three intentional walks while Owen Stratton was 3-for-5 with a two-run double in the fourth inning that tied the game.

Glen Lake opened with a 7-0 win over Buckley. The Lakers had seven players hit, including Jordan Hill with a double. Waning got the win with five strikeouts and only two hits allowed — both doubles to Joel Ledford and Tyler Welch.

TC Central falls short in D-1 final

Traverse City Central lost in the Division 1 regional final for the second straight year, this time a 3-2 setback against Flushing at Saginaw Valley State.

Zack Dorer was 3-for-3 with an RBI double for the Trojans (27-11). Nick Keller broke a school record with his 17th double while Brad Keller also added a double.

In the first game, TC Central beat Grand Blanc 8-5. Nick Keller took the win in five innings with five strikeouts to move his season record to 13-2 — also a school record. Brad Keller got the save with three strikeouts.

Brady Brantley was 3-for-3, Nick Keller was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Bryce Bondie had a two-run hit while Brad Keller and T.J. Shepperly each had an RBI hit.

SOFTBALL

Bellaire wins first regional since 2008

Bellaire earned its first D-4 regional title since 2008 with a 6-4 win over Glen Lake at Frankfort.

The Eagles (25-12) got the win from Mackenzie Verellen with nine strikeouts. She added an RBI hit while Chelsye Bartsch had three hits and two RBIs and Katie Thornton had two hits and an RBI double.

For the Bulldogs, Sierra Bates took the loss with six strikeouts. Clara Jurek had two hits, an RBI and a run scored and Clara Konnerup had a two-run hit.

Bellaire opened with a 1-0 win over host Frankfort. Verellen got the win with six strikeouts. Mariah Cords had a double while Madalyn Balon had two hits and a stolen base.

For Frankfort (22-14-2), Tami Banktson took the loss with eight strikeouts and only three hits allowed. She also had a hit along with Jessica Schaub and Keelan Kelly, who doubled.

Mesick (17-16) beat Glen Lake 4-3 in the first game as Bates pitched her best game of the season with four strikeouts. She also had a hit and two runs scored. Kendra Barnes had two hits and two RBIs while Tia Hoffman had an RBI hit.

Warsecke fifth at Midwest meet

Benzie Central senior Theresa Warsecke took fifth in the 800 at the Midwest Meet of Champions.

She finished in 2:13.1m which set a school record.

The meet was by invite only of the top three seniors in each event from Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.
