TRAVERSE CITY --After a strong fall cross country season, Traverse City West senior Alec Ondrajka is looking forward to spring track — and then possibly a summer trip to Australia.
Ondrajka has been selected to run in two Down Under Sports races in Australia in early July.
Ondrajka qualified for the Division 1 state meet in November, finishing 98th overall in 16:25. He was contacted by recruiters from the Down Under Sports program afterwards.
"I was grateful and surprised," he said.
Ondrajka hopes to raise the $5,000 needed to make the trip through fundraisers, sponsors and donations by June 2.
Ondrajka will compete in a 5.7K race that's part of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon. The race can be seen via webcast at www.goldcoastmarathon.com.au.
"There will be more than 3,000 runners from 33 countries represented," Ondrajka said.
Runners will also compete in an All-American 5K race.
Ondrajka is still undecided about his college plans. He's hoping a strong track season could open some more doors.
Ondrajka has been running five to six days a week during the winter to prepare for spring. An All-Region pick in cross country, Ondrajka plans to run the 800, 1600 and 3200 in track.
For those interested in supporting Ondrajka, he can be reached at 231-409-8059.
