BENZONIA — Down 14-3 in the first quarter, Kingsley fought back to claim a 55-50 win over Benzie Central in a Northwest Conference girls basketball showdown Wednesday.
Autumn Goggin powered Kingsley, now 4-0 in the league, with 22 points. She was 14-of-17 at the foul line, 9-of-10 in the second half. Andrea Lee added 11 points.
Jordan Nye tossed in 21 points and had four steals for Benzie, which fell to 3-1 in the league and 5-3 overall. Paige Sauer added eight points.
Benzie led 26-23 at half. Kingsley took the lead for good in the third quarter, taking a 45-41 edge into the final eight minutes.
Glen Lake 52 Leland 28
Scotlyn Brengman's 16 points, seven rebounds, six steals and five assists powered Glen Lake past Leland 52-28 in Northwest Conference play.
Jessica Lee added nine points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Lakers (6-3, 2-1), who host Mesick on Friday.
Libby Munoz had 10 points and Caitlin McKee eight for the Comets (3-6, 1-3), who play Kingsley on Friday.
The Lakers led 30-22 at half.
St. Francis 71 Grayling 30
St. Francis improved to 7-1 with a 71-30 Lake Michigan Conference win over Grayling.
Every Gladiator scored.
Liza Erickson led the way with 14 points. Kenzie Fenney added 12 for St. Francis (4-0 in the league).
The Gladiators, who host Charlevoix on Saturday, won the JV game by 27-25. Suzanne Britten scored eight points, including two game-winning free throws with 20.9 seconds remaining.
LL St. Mary 54 Suttons Bay 25
Rachael Thon led a balanced attack with 15 points as Lake Leelanau St. Mary defeated Suttons Bay 54-25.
Lindsey Boone added 14 points and Megan Popp 12 for the Eagles.
Delaney Kaufman had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Suttons Bay.
Johannesburg 62 Inland Lakes 48
Brittany Cherwinski's 20 points, seven steals and four assists led Johannesburg-Lewiston to a 62-48 Ski Valley Conference win over Inland Lakes.
Hannah Huff contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds and Abby Schlicher nine points, nine steals, six assists and two blocks as the Cardinals (8-0, 6-0) remained unbeaten.
Sarah Kolb tossed in 19 points and Sandy Bischoff 16 for Inland Lakes.
Gaylord St. Mary 65 Mancelona 14
Kari Borowiak netted 22 points as Gaylord St. Mary defeated Mancelona 65-14 in Ski Valley Conference play.
Bekah Myler added 12 points for the Snowbirds (8-2, 6-1), who face Central Lake next Wednesday.
Makenzie Wilson scored five points for Mancelona.
Onaway 65 Forest Area 41
Onaway put three players in double figures in disposing of Forest Area 65-41 in a Ski Valley contest.
Kallie Shimel led the Cardinals (7-2, 5-2) with 19 points. Mariah Ehrke added 16 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Emily Estep contributed 13 points and nine steals.
Allie Schuster paced Forest Area (1-5) with eight points. Emily Gonyer had seven points and four steals. Kortni Birgy pulled down 16 rebounds.
GT Academy 47
Tiffany Wright scored 16 points as Grand Traverse Academy posted its first win of the season, 47-25 over Alba.
Dakota Morgan added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs.
Mackinaw City 67 Ellsworth 50
Mackinaw City handed Ellsworth its first Northern Lakes Conference loss, 67-50.
The Comets, unbeaten in league play, were led by the tandem of Courtney Wallis and Claudia Alexander, who combined for 45 points. Wallis had 25 and Alexander 20.
Tara Essenberg paced Ellsworth (3-4, 3-1) with 26 points. Kari Steenwyck and Kendra Warner followed with nine.
Manistee CC 45 BR Crossroads 34
Manistee Catholic remained unbeaten in the West Michigan D with a 45-34 win over Big Rapids Crossroads Academy.
It was the first league loss for Crossroads.
Aylsha Heck paced Catholic with 16 points. Haley Doyle added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Sabers (8-1, 5-0) led 30-13 at half. They play Walkerville on Friday.
Titans, Trojans fall in BNC openers
Traverse City West and Traverse City Central opened Big North Conference action by dropping duals to Gaylord and Ogemaw Heights.
The Titans fell to Ogemaw Heights 48-30 and to Gaylord 60-12. Vincent Priante was 2-0 at 103 pounds for West. Jonah Jasman at 125, Caleb Kase at 140, Ryan Drake at 189 and James Peck at 215 all won one match,
Central won one match in each of the two duals — Justice Korson had a pin at 140 pounds against Ogemaw Heights while Josiah Lopez-Wild won by injury default at 185 pounds against Gaylord.
Kalkaska 53 Manistee 52
Caleb Gelinas knocked down a 3-pointer with under 30 seconds left to give Kalkaska a 53-52 non-conference victory over Manistee.
The win gives the Blazers (3-3) as many wins as the last two seasons combined.
Gelinas scored 17 points in the game, while Mike Dunn added 14 points and nine rebounds, Will Noble chipped in 13 points and eight boards and Mitch Dunn scored nine.
Andrew Solberg scored 21 points to lead Manistee.
Petoskey 5 Bay Reps 4
Ben Schwartzfisher scored a hat trick to lead Petoskey to a 5-4 victory over the Bay Reps.
The Northmen raced out to a 5-1 lead before the Reps clawed back into the contest with three straight scores — two by Nate Wilson.
Skye Pieffer and Tanner Davis scored Petoskey's other goals.
Travis Kirk scored the first Reps goal off Zach Hill and Trevor Apsey assists, while Gavin Uitvlugt opened up the team's three-goal surge in the third with a score off Nick Sicinski and Wilson helpers.
Wilson's two goals were set up by Sicinski and John VanRaalte.
Jay Jones made 12 saves in goal.
The Reps (4-10) host Alpena at Centre ICE Saturday night.
