HARBOR SPRINGS — Traverse City will be well represented at the Division 1 state skiing finals later this month.
Both Traverse City Central and TC West placed their boys and girls in the top three at Thursday regional at Boyne Highlands, sending them on to the state meet on Feb. 25 at Boyne Mountain.
"We're very excited about that," Titans coach Ed Johnson said. "Both of our teams are ramping up and seem to be building and building at the right time."
In the girls meet, TC Central won the regional with 43 points while the Titans were 60 and Marquette also qualified with 98 points.
"It was a good day for us," Trojans girls coach Jerry Stanek said. "Our girls lost Shannon Weaver in the slalom, which put us in a little bit of a bind. But, we have six strong girls. We really skied well in the GS. We're ready for states."
Madison Ostergren won the GS in 58.09 for TC Central while Weaver was second (58.80). Cassidy Klein was sixth (1:00.03) and Molly Whiting was ninth (1:01.34). In the slalom, Ostergren was second (1:14.39), Klein was fourth (1:17.35), Devon Dotterrer was ninth (1:21.84) and Paige Pfannenstiel was 10th (1:22.62).
TC West's Monica Hessler was the regional champ in the slalom in 1:13.67. Morgan Culp was fifth (1:17.70), Katherine Hornbogen was eighth (1:21.52) and Claire Podges was 12th (1:24.35). In the GS, Culp and Hessler tied for fourth (1:00.02), Devan Gorton was 12th (1:02.51) and Hornbogen was 13th (1:03.10).
The boys meet was a tight race, as Marquette took the regional with 65.5 points, followed by TC Central with 68 and TC West with 77. The Trojans won the GS in the morning while the Titans won the slalom in the afternoon.
TC West's Finley Clark won the slalom in 1:09.85. Matthew Lowe was seventh (1:16.27), Austin Skibowski was ninth (1:16.39) and Ben Friar was 13th (1:17.37). In the GS, Clark was fifth (59.34), Skibowski was ninth (1:00.25), Friar was 14th (1:00.93) and Ryan Geiser was 19th (1:01.93).
TC Central had the morning lead in the GS after John Whiting took second (58.87), Kurt Frick was fourth (59.33), Tyler Sepanik was sixth (59.41) and Kalvis Hornburg was seventh (59.56).
"We got off to a great start," Trojans coach Nick Stanek said. "We had some outstanding performances from some freshmen. Really, the young kids brought us through the morning race. In the slalom, we lost a couple in the first run and we were in a little bit of a hold-back. But, they really came through."
Whiting was fifth in the slalom (1:15.55), Lars Hornburg was sixth (1:15.78), Frick was 11th (1:17.14) and Jacob Gerstner was 27th (1:28.24).
