Roundup: Olson keys Kingsley victory

KINGSLEY — Austin Olson scored 11 straight first-quarter points off the bench to help Kingsley to a 67-44 Northwest Conference boys basketball victory Wednesday over Buckley.

Olson ended with 15 points, and Jack Ocobock had 17 points and five assists.

Dillon Bach notched 14 points and Deon Harrison scored all eight of his points in the second quarter.

The Stags (5-6, 3-4 NWC) host Frankfort on Friday.

Jake Larson had 12 and Evan Chalker 11 for the Bears.

BOYS HOOPS

Glen Lake      63 Frankfort      54

Glen Lake turned a six-point first-quarter advantage into a 16-point lead by halftime in a 63-54 Northwest Conference victory over Frankfort.

Mike O'Brien had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers (7-4, 5-1 NWC) — who travel Friday to Benzie Central — while Carter Lee added 21 points and seven boards.

Brandon Miller scored 22 for the Panthers.

Suttons Bay      46 Leland      36

Greg Banks led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds as Suttons Bay posted a 46-36 Northwest Conference win over Leland.

Mason Darling added 12 and Aaron Orban grabbed eight boards and Guy Beachnau seven rebounds for the Norsemen (9-2, 5-1 NWC), who travel Friday to Mesick.

A.J. Whittaker had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Comets (5-5, 3-4 NWC), who host Buckley on Friday.

TC Christian      64 Ellsworth      32

Paul Bump scored 12 of his game-high 18 points in a 22-9 first-quarter run as Traverse City Christian topped Ellsworth for a non-conference victory.

A.J. Weber added 14 points and Travis Hall had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Sabres (8-3), who travel Monday to Northport.

Matt Barraw scored 13 points and Jake Seaney had nine points and 12 rebounds for the Lancers (4-7), who travel Friday to Mancelona.

Bellaire      72 Inland Lakes      32

Bellaire had five players in double figures in a 72-32 Ski Valley Conference victory over Inland Lakes.

Reese Koepke scored 13 points, Mitch Teetzel had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Denny Hall, Kasey Poel and Gus Meriwether each had 11 points.

The Eagles (11-0, 9-0 SVC) host rival Central Lake on Friday.

Josh O'Connor led the Bulldogs with eight points.

Central Lake      60 Onaway      41

Central Lake's big second quarter turned a two-point deficit into a 13-point lead before the Trojans went on for a 60-41 Ski Valley Conference win over Onaway.

The Cardinals led 17-15 after one period, but trailed 35-22 at the half.

Trevor Papineau led Central Lake (7-5, 5-3 SVC) with 13 points, Zach Harvey added 12 and Patrick Sutherland 10. The Trojans travel Friday to rival Bellaire.

Joe O'Bradovich led Onaway with 12 points.

Pellston      68 Mancelona      46

Chris Hass scored 24 points and Andy Hamlin 20 to lead Pellston to a 68-46 Ski Valley Conference win over Mancelona.

Brandon Dingman had 26 points and six rebounds for the Ironmen (4-6, 3-5 SVC), who host Ellsworth on Friday. Brandon Scott added six boards.

Manistee Catholic      56 Mason Co. Eastern      46

Zach Bialik scored 16 and Ben Feliczak 14 to lead Manistee Catholic Central to a 56-46 Western Michigan D League win over Mason County Eastern.

Andrew Perry added eight for the Sabers (10-3, 9-1 WMD).

Tyler Thurston's 17 led Mason County.

GIRLS HOOPS

McBain      54 Evart      16

McBain shut down third-place Evart in a Highland Conference make-up game.

The Ramblers (11-1, 8-0 HC) were up 24-4 after one quarter and shut down the Wildcats completely in the second to lead 32-4 at the half.

Annemarie Hamlet and Meredith Hamlet each scored 14 points, while Dani Hoekwater chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds. Brittany Watson held Evart's leading scorer to zero points.

McBain hosts Lake City on Friday at 6 p.m.

Petoskey      45 Charlevoix      27

Megan Tompkins scored 14 points as Petoskey topped Charlevoix 45-27 in a non-conference victory.

Kelsey Ance and Alyssa VanWerden each had 10 for the Northmen.

Chelsea Way scored seven to lead the Rayders, who host Boyne City on Friday.

HOCKEY

Alpena      4 TC West      2

Alpena notched a 4-2 Big North Conference win over Traverse City West, using power-play goals to make the difference.

With the game tied 2-2 midway through the second period, the Wildcats scored on two advantages.

Jake Saxton and Alex Grizzel scored goals for the Titans, with Jason Kloosterman, Willie Hanrahan and Nate Madigan drawing assists.

TC West (7-10-1, 4-3-1 BNC) played Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern on Feb. 10 in the MIHL Showcase, then defending Division 2 state champs Wyandotte on Feb. 11.

SKIING

Glen Lake sweeps LMC with boys, girls crowns

Glen Lake won both the boys and girls titles at the Lake Michigan Ski Conference championships.

Christina Rennie led the girls' team by winning both the slalom and giant slalom to clinch the season league title in each.

In GS, the Glen Lake girls took the top eight finishes, with Rennie first in 48:91, and teammates Madison Fink second (54:13) and Katie Pershinske third (54:52).

Benzie Central's Bailey Nugent was second in the slalom, with teammate Aria Grabowski third.

Glen Lake's Thomas Waning captured the league's overall slalom title and won the conference final with a 58.91.

Benzie's David Cunningham was second in the slalom in 1:01.06, while the Lakers' Pete Kerby-Miller was third in 1:01.7.

Bellaire's Max King won the GS in 48.77 to capture the overall league crown in the discipline. Waning was second and Kerby-Miller third.

TC Central, Petoskey win BNC meet

Traverse City Central's girls and Petoskey's boys won Tuesday's Big North Conference races at Nub's Nob.

The Trojans won with 35.5 points, followed by Petoskey (58) and TC West (63.5).

For Central, Shannon Weaver won the giant slalom in 52.66. Cassidy Klein was fourth (53.69), Cecily Olsen was sixth (54.91) and Paige Pfannenstiel was eighth (55.56).

Weaver was second in the slalom (1:01.02), Klein third (1:01.43), Olsen fifth (1:03.14) and Pfannenstiel sixth (1:03.59).

West's Lili Lockwood won the slalom (59.27), Morgan Culp was eighth (1:04.52), Mary Mikko was ninth (1:04.65) and Elle Rivard 11th (1:05.31). Lockwood was fifth in the GS (54.08), Monica Hessler was sixth (54.91), Culp was 11th (56.43) and Mikko was 12th (57.29).

Petoskey's boys won with 50 points. Cadillac was second (74), West third (78) and Central fourth (87.5).

Ryan Ness won the slalom for the Titans in 55.23. Finley Clark was third (57.38), Ben Friar was 14th (1:02.43) and Matt Lowe was 21st (1:12.1). Ness was second in the GS (52.77), Clark was fifth (53.35), Lowe 13th (55) and Mo Dittmar was 19th (1:00.73).

Central's Kalvis Hornburg won the GS in 52.61. Nake Mikulski was 10th (54.44), Kurt Frick was 12th (54.98) and Zak Collins was 14th (55.2). Hornburg was fifth in the slalom (59.07), Frick was 13th (1:02.22), Mikulski was 15th (1:02.68) and Dirk Phelps was 17th (1:03.42).

TC Central JV Gold sweeps Elk Rapids

Traverse City Central's JV Gold teams swept Elk Rapids on Wednesday.

The boys won 36-39, whiel the girls claimed a 31-48 victory.

Central's Brady Versluis won the giant slalom, while teammate Ben Cockfield was third. The Elks' Sean Wells was second.

In slalom, Elk Rapids' Nick Cunningham and Jake Klein were the top two finishers, while Versluis was third.

Elk Rapids' Shelby Tulk won both the slalom and GS, while Central's Angela Seraphinoff was runner-up in each. The Trojans' Tulli Linna was third in slalom, and Olivia Luciani was third in GS.
