Prep Basketball Roundup: Lakers hand Glads first loss

TRAVERSE CITY — Glen Lake handed host St. Francis its first loss of the season Tuesday with a 50-40 non-conference win.

“They played a whale of a game,” Gladiators coach Keith Haske said. “They defended us well and out-rebounded us.”

The Lakers (17-2) were led by Mike O’Brien’s 20 points. Curtis Bunek had 10 points and Carter Lee added nine points.

For the Glads (18-1), Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi had 10 points while Austin Currie had eight points.

St. Francis hosts Elk Rapids on Thursday while Glen Lake is at Benzie.

Midland 69

TC Central 50

Midland picked up a 69-50 win over TC Central.

The Chemics had 19 points from Will Williams. As a team, they made 10 3-pointers.

The Trojans (5-14) had 18 points from Tanner Kenney while Taylor Cook had 16 points.

Midland also won the JV game 45-39 and the freshman contest 58-25. TC Central is at Cadillac on Thursday.

Manistee CC 75

Brethren 47

Manistee Catholic Central clinched the Western Michigan D League title outright with a 75-47 win over Brethren.

The Sabers (15-3, 14-1 WMDL) got off to a hot start with a 45-21 halftime lead. Zack Bialik led the way with 26 points and seven rebounds while Ben Feliczak had 25 points and 12 boards. Andrew Perry had eight rebounds and seven assists while Joey Gamache had four assists.

Harbor Springs 48

Suttons Bay 41

Harbor Springs had three players in double digits for a 48-41 non-conference win at Suttons Bay.

The Norse (6-12) were led by Logan Mikesell’s 17 points. Neal Zoerhoef had 15 points for the Rams.

Suttons Bay and Mesick will meet on Thursday and Friday to wrap up the regular season.

Frankfort 63

Elk Rapids 61

Frankfort rallied late for a 63-61 win over Elk Rapids and ended a three-game losing streak.

The Panthers (15-4) trailed 32-22 at the half, but took the lead late with a couple of turnovers. David Loney had 24 points in the win while Owen Stratton had 22 points.

Austin McMullen led the Elks with 21 points.

Mason Co. Central 77

Benzie Central 44

Mason County Central picked up a 77-44 non-conference win over Benzie Central.

The Spartans had 19 points from Kody Ambrose while Payton Kindull scored 16 points.

Nate Oren and Corey Weaver each had 13 points for the Huskies.

Leland 56

Northport 34

A.J. Whittaker had a big night for Leland in a 56-34 win over Northport.

Whittaker had 22 points and 18 rebounds for the Comets (9-9) while Ian Duvall added 12 points.

Bill Stowe had 15 points for the Wildcats.

Leland plays Buckley on Thursday and at Kingsley Saturday to round out the regular season.

Charlevoix 73

Cheboygan 47

Charlevoix rolled to a 73-47 non-conference win over Cheboygan.

Zach Hankins led the Rayders (13-5) with 12 points while Charlie Hamilton and Tanner Catt each had 11 points.

Ben Pearson had 15 points for Cheboygan.

Charlevoix plays Grayling on Thursday.

Forest Area 59

Mesick 42

Forest Area had a big second half for a 59-42 non-conference win over Mesick.

The Warriors (14-5) had 22 points from Chad Roberts, 15 points and six rebounds from Austin Vance, 11 points, 12 rebounds and five assists from Justin Burke while Chris Birgy had six rebounds off the bench.

Thane Herbert had 16 points for the Bulldogs.

Bellaire 67

Inland Lakes 36

Bellaire posted a 67-36 Ski Valley Conference win over Inland Lakes.

The teams will meet again on Thursday to wrap up the regular season.

The Eagles (18-0) had 16 points, four rebounds and three steals from Mitch Teetzel while Denny Hall had 12 points and five assists. Drew Bailey added eight points, four assists and three rebounds.

Dakota Davedowski led Inland Lakes with 13 points.

Mancelona 48

Gaylord St. Mary 46

Mancelona closed out the regular season with a 48-46 Ski Valley Conference win over Gaylord St. Mary.

The Ironmen (15-5, 13-3 SVC) had 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals from Brandon Dingman while Logan Borst had eight points and three steals. Brandon Scott chipped in 10 points.

Charles Strehl had 14 points for the Snowbirds while Nick Harrington had 13 points and Matt Spyhalski 10.

Bear Lake 68

TC Christian 64

Cody Brown and Riley Merrill each scored 14 points for Bear Lake in a 68-64 win over TC Christian.

Brown added six steals for the Lakers (10-7) while Merrill had five rebounds. Bryson Waller had 13 points and four assists.

Kris Crosby led the Sabres (12-5) with 28 points and 17 rebounds. Paul Bump had 15 points and four steals while Jesse Heerdt had 15 points and five rebounds.

Grayling 60

Houghton Lake 41

Tyler McClanahan’s 12 points and five steals led Grayling to a 60-41 non-conference victory over Houghton Lake.

Scott Parkinson added 10 points for the Vikings (15-4), who travel Thursday to Charlevoix to close out the regular season.

Nathan Shavalia scored 15 to lead the Bobcats.
