GAYLORD — Tanner Kenney hit a free throw with .4 of a second remaining Tuesday night as Traverse City Central edged Gaylord 38-37 in a Big North Conference opener.
The Trojans called time with four seconds left after a defensive rebound. Taylor Cook fed Kenney, who was cutting to the basket for his last-second attempt. He hit one of two free throws to end it.
"It wasn't pretty," Central coach Jeff Turner. "But we found a way. We persevered. We had to overcome 28 turnovers. We felt lucky to walk out with a W."
The Trojans led 19-18 at half. It was 33-28 after three quarters.
Kenney, a 6-7 junior, finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Cook added nine points.
Tyler Frisch led Gaylord with 13. The Blue Devils hit just two of 24 3-point attempts.
Central won the JV game 43-38 as Tanner Schwannecke netted 12 points. The Trojans lost the freshman game 58-40. Mason Houston's 11 topped the Trojans, who host Dexter on Saturday.
Traverse City West, meanwhile, suffered a 57-40 setback at Midland in its season opener.
The Titans trailed by just four entering the fourth quarter.
"We turned the ball over on four of our first five possessions in the fourth quarter," West coach Brett Graham said. "It was a competitive game until then."
"We played hard, but we're kind of learning on the fly right now."
Alex Scott scored 12 points while Donny Cizek chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jeremiah Williams pulled down six rebounds.
Ty DeJonge led Midland with 18 points.
Midland won the JV game 70-57. Thyo Lukusa topped West with 11. Devin Dial added 10.
The Titans won the freshman game 42-39 as Jared Roth tossed in 15 points and Josh Roman eight.
West hosts Dexter on Friday night.
