St. Mary's golf places 3rd in state

Garber wins D-2 individual crown

Paul Bardenhagen's 10th-place finish led Lake Leelanau St. Mary's to place third in the Division 4 state finals at Ypsilanti's Eagle Crest Golf Course.

Kalamazoo Hacket won the team title with a score of 623 in the two-day tournament. Muskegon Western Michigan was just two strokes back and St. Mary's was third with 657.

Inland Lake's Brandon Vizina was tied for third individually, following up Friday's 74 with a 77 on Saturday. Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest's Zach Preuss was the overall medalist with a 148.

Traverse City St. Francis individual qualifier Evan Miller placed 13th with a 159, putting up a 78 the second day. He hit 14 of 18 greens each day and was three strokes out of the top 10.

St. Mary's other counters were Mike Pendergast (165), Joe Pendergast (167) and Nick Shaffran (176). Bardenhagen carded a 156, including a 76 on Saturday. The Eagles' Jim Varley was named district and regional coach of the year.

Glen Lake was seventh, jumping one spot over Suttons Bay, which finished eighth.

The Lakers were paced by Matt O'Brien (160), Matt Abrsamson (162), Collin Richardson (172) and Mike O'Brien (176).

Chase Palmer and Conor Loberg each finished with 172s to lead the Norsemen, along with Sean Lammy (176) and Mason Darling (182).

Manistee Catholic Central was ninth, led by Nick Kolanowski (163), Zack Bialik (165), Zach Luomala (176) and Zach Smith (193).

Inland Lake's Zach Ginop shot a 164 as an individual qualifier.

PETOSKEY'S GARBER WINS DIVISION 2 CROWN: Petoskey's Joey Garber shot a second-round 68 to win the Division 2 individual state title by four strokes.

Brimingham Seaholm's Francesco Ruffino and Haslett's Trevor Rosekrans each shot 146.

Garber — a senior who will be going to Michigan next year — shot a 74 in the opening round for a two-day total of 142.

TC WEST 11TH IN DIVISION 1: Traverse City West was two shots short of tying a school record set earlier this season as the Titans moved up two spots to finish 11th in the Division 1 state finals.

Gates Muller led West with a 146, followed by Payden Myers (152), Josh Broad (156) and Ian Davis (158).

Traverse City Central's Pat Colburn — an individual qualifier — shot a 152.

The Titans set the school record for lowest team round with a 3-1 this eason in Cadillac.

Detroit Catholic Central won the state crown by shooting a 569, earning the Shamrocks their sixth state title this school year.

Colburn and Muller are staying downstate to compete in the Michigan Open starting Monday at Orchard Lake Country Club.

CHARLEVOIX EIGHTH IN DIVISION 3: Tyler Jones placed 10th overall to lead Charlevoix to a seventh-place finish in the Division 3 state finals.

The Rayders' other counters were Thomas Rich (165), Wyatt Drost (167) and Gunnar Whitley (174).

Jackson Lumen Christi won the Division crown with a 604, a whopping 29 shots ahead of runner-up Big Rapids.

Grayling's Taylor DesEnfants shot a 176 after qualifying as an individual.
