Blazers fall to Shepherd in baseball

Bluejays score game's only run in final inning

TRAVERSE CITY — Shepherd scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh Tuesday to beat Kalkaska 1-0 in a Division 3 baseball quarterfinal at Traverse City West.

The Bluejays, 38-3, will face Bath in a semifinal Friday afternoon at Battle Creek's Bailey Park.

Kalkaska finished its season 30-5.

Tuesday's quarterfinal featured a pitching duel between Shepherd's Colton Loomis and Kalkaska's Travis Schuba.

The Bluejays pushed across the game's only run in the seventh when Schuba fielded a bunt and threw errantly to first, allowing Mike Lehmkuhle to advance all the way to third. Robert Stack, who fouled off two squeeze attempts, then blooped a double to right to score Lehmkuhle.

Loomis allowed just one hit, striking out 12 for the Bluejays. Schuba (12-2) pitched a four-hitter for Kalkaska. Three of the hits came off the bat of Troy Stressman.

Kalkaska loaded the bases in the fourth, but could not capitalize.

The Blazers had defeated Ironwood 5-4 Saturday to win their first regional since 2005.
