KALAMAZOO -- Josh Kurtz and Patrick Wilson entered the Division 4 state tennis finals Friday as No. 6 seeds in No. 3 doubles.
The two emerged Saturday as champions.
Kurtz and Wilson swept top-seeded Andrew Sackett and David Goldfarb of Ann Arbor Greenhills 6-1, 6-0 to capture the flight. Earlier in the day, the duo knocked off No. 2 seed Sahir Choudhry and Akash Sudhakara of Grosse Ile 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
St. Francis finished fifth overall with 16 points -- the best finish in school history. Ann Arbor Greenhills won the title with 35 points.
Kurtz, a senior, and Wilson, a junior, finished the season 34-6.
"They're a tough team," Gladiators coach Annie Murphy said. "They're really consistent.
"They played really well in the finals. They're very deserving of their medal."
Kurtz and Wilson also beat the No. 3 seed in the quarterfinals.
"They just never let down," Murphy said.
St. Francis was in the semifinals in two other flights Saturday but lost to the eventual champions. At No. 3 singles, Mac Corcoran lost to Williamston's Brett Graham 6-2, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Alex Primeau dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to George Tam of Ann Arbor Greenhills.
