Roundup: Perfection for Kingsley, Pellston

KINGSLEY -- Kingsley is halfway to a Northwest Conference volleyball championship.

The Stags beat Benzie Central 25-13, 25-7, 25-19 in a battle of league unbeatens Tuesday. Kingsley finished the regular season 7-0 in the Northwest, Benzie 6-1. The regular season counts half towards the league title. The league tournament, which will be Saturday at Suttons Bay, counts the other half.

Kingsley (41-5-4) also beat St. Francis 25-19, 25-6 on Senior Night to finish unbeaten at home this season. In fact, the Stags did not even lose a set at home.

Leading the way: Hannah Bach (23 kills, three blocks, seven digs), Sam Zubalik (20 kills, 23 of 25 serving with eight aces, 17 digs), Lauren Leach (17 kills, three blocks, 19 digs), Chelsea Edgcombe (14 kills, 9 of 10 serving, eight digs), Erica Berridge (21 of 21 serving, 60 assists, 13 digs) and Katie Nickerson (22 of 23 serving, 21 digs).

Benzie (44-11-5) downed St. Francis 25-13, 26-24 to finish 1-1 on the night. Pacing the Huskies: Sara Thurkettle (21 kills, two blocks, 18 of 19 serving with two aces), Haeley Melton (10 kills, four blocks, 21 digs, 22 of 22 serving with two aces), Jenna Scheele (eight kills, four digs), Corrie Noah (five blocks, three kills, 12 of 13 serving), Kate Masell (15 digs, 12 of 12 serving with one ace) and Raenee Harig (39 assists, 11 digs, one ace).

Suttons Bay 3
Buckley 0

Suttons Bay earned a 25-12, 25-15, 25-7 Northwest Conference win over Buckley.

The Bears (7-30-1, 1-6 NWC) had six digs each from Caley Blanchard, Haley Ballinger and Alesha Welling.

Leland 3
Glen Lake 1

Leland finished the Northwest Conference regular season with a 4-3 record after a win over Glen Lake.

The Comets (15-22-1) won 25-23, 19-25, 25-16, 25-19.

Leland had 11 kills, three digs and four aces from Elizabeth McKee, eight kills, four digs and two aces from Sara Ruszel, six kills and four assists from Sammy Nowak, five kills, three blocks and five aces from Tantzi Snyder, 26 assists and five aces from Hannah Schaub and 12 digs from Katlyn Fleis.

Glen Lake (2-5 NWC) had nine kills, 11 digs and three aces from Dani Frost, 11 digs and 19-for-19 serving from Casey Kahler, 23 assists and four blocks from Casey Hawkins, five kills and 13 digs from Krissy Bush and six kills from Maddy Gerging.

Central Lake 2

Pellston won the Ski Valley title for a 10th consecutive season with a 17-25, 25-7, 25-14, 22-25, 15-6 showdown win over Central Lake.

"We played well as a team tonight," Hornets coach Tim McNitt said. "Our defense worked very hard and that got our offense going.

"I think the move to adjust our defense with two setters on the floor has really paid off. We have more digs from the right side resulting in more assist and kill opportunities. I'm pleased with the progress we've made from a little mid-season regression. The girls really stepped up and played hard in front of big crowd."

Pellston (39-6-8, 8-0) was led by Katie Dzedzie (three aces, 10 kills, five block kills, 19 digs), Rachel Hutto (three aces, five kills, two block kills, eight digs), Tayler Friend (three aces, 20 kills, one block kill, 17 digs), Kristi Lewis (12 kills, 5 block kills), Chelsea Bonter (28 assists, 24 digs) and Samantha McNitt (16 assists, 9 digs).

Inland Lakes 0

Forest Area improved to 6-2 in the Ski Valley with a 25-8, 25-21, 25-19 win over Inland Lakes.

The Warriors (35-9-4) were led by Katie Johnson (27 assists), Mae Johnson (15 kills), Chelsea Strine (nine kills, 10 digs), Kassie Magee (seven digs, three aces), Camille Tornow (12 digs) and Marissa Ingersoll (four aces).

Elk Rapids 3
Boyne City 2

Down 2-0, Elk Rapids roared back for a 21-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-18, 15-2 Lake Michigan Conference win over Boyne City.

Jessie Spoor had 12 straight service points in the fifth and deciding game.

The Elks (22-20-3, 8-3) were led by Olivia Morrison (22 digs, three aces, 15 assists, seven kills, 11 saves), Spoor (eight digs, 12 aces, seven kills), Sarah Otte (14 digs, four kills, two saves, three blocks), Hannah Pinkawa (seven kills, five blocks), Kelly Thelen (four assists) and Kelly VanDusen (nine digs, three aces, three kills, one block).

Leland 0

Zach Gordon scored off an assist from Ryder Lewis 13 minutes into the second half as Glen Lake edged Leland 1-0 in a Division 4 district soccer game.

SWIMMING

TC Central, TC West win on Senior Night

Both Traverse City Central and TC West picked up wins over Ludington on Senior Night at the Civic Center.

The Trojans won 92-91 while the Titans earned a 114-69 victory.

Central's 200 medley relay team of Chloe Seymour, Nadine Tueck, Claire Wodzien and Michelle Rizor won in 2 minutes, 14.26 seconds.

Erin Cover won the 200 free (2:14.12), Lauren Pflughoeft took the 100 butterfly (1:18.80), Tueck won the 200 IM (2:40.20) and Wodzien won the 500 free (5:58.84).

West's Shea Williams won the 200 IM (2:29.81) and the 500 free (6:04.21). Megan Cepela was champ in the 50 free (26.69) and the 100 butterfly (1:11.52).

Kendall Cox won diving (167.95), Paige Rogers took the 100 backstroke (1:07.98) and Shelby Newhouse won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.55).

Rogers, Newhouse, Sarah Brunner and Loren Sieloff teamed to win the 200 medley relay (2:01.82).

Central and West will send swimmers to the MISCA meet Saturday at Eastern Michigan.
