TRAVERSE CITY — Josh Stiglich scored in the first half Thursday to lift Traverse City West to a 1-0 Big North Conference soccer win over Petoskey.

Brandon Montgomery assisted on the goal as the Titans remained unbeaten in league play at 5-0-1.

West put 10 shots on goal, Petoskey three.

The Northmen missed a penalty kick with about four minutes to go.

"We got one and that's all we needed," Titans coach Jason Carmien said of the low-scoring contest.

Justin Kraft was in goal for West, now 8-2-2 overall. Petoskey fell to 3-2 in the league and 4-7-1 overall.

West won the JV game 5-2. Scott Wesenberg and Nico Ragel-Wilson netted two goals each. Cooper Kirby also tallied.

Cross Country

Mason Co. Central sweeps Kingsley Invite

Mason County Central won the boys and girls meets at the Kingsley Invitational.

The girls edged St. Francis 38-39. Kingsley was third with 85.

St. Francis freshman Holly Bullough was the overall winner in 19:41. Maddy Danz was seventh (21:57), Lauren Buckel was eighth (22:10), Krissi Dressler was ninth (22:14), Erin McDonnell was 14th (22:50) and Annie Lyman was 15th (23:06).

For Kingsley, Sarah Lueck placed 12th (22:32), Jenny Pearson 13th (22:48), Nicole Brown 18th (23:36), Courtney Adams 19th (23:36) and Lexie Keena 23rd (24:06).

Mason County Central won the boys meet with 25 points. Kingsley took second with 69 and Manton third with 95.

Mason County's Chase Barnett was the individual winner in 17:25. Kingsley's Jake Keena was second (17:39). Also scoring for the Stags: Austin Olson 14th (19:06), Richard Durecki 15th (19:12), Marcus O'Hara 16th (19:15) and Dylan Zenner 22nd (19:47).

St. Francis placed Mark Mol eighth (18:39), Nick Fisher 19th (19:38) and Matt Mawby 25th (25:11).

St. Francis runs at Ellsworth on Saturday.

Grayling     204 Glen Lake     211

Whitney Schans earned medalist honors with a 46 as Grayling edged Glen Lake 204-211 in a match at Mistwood.

Angie Rouston and Natalie Woodley each fired a 52 and Logan Miller a 54 for the Vikings.

Melanie Kulanda and Nicole Pace topped the Lakers with a 48. Madison Hill carded a 52 and Skylar Gleason a 63.

Glen Lake hosts Harbor Springs next Wednesday.

VOLLEYBALL

Charlevoix      3 Elk Rapids      0

Karley Pearsall had 10 kills to lead Charlevoix to a straight-game win over Elk Rapids.

The Rayders won 25-16, 25-17, 25-23. Pearsall added three aces and two blocks.

Other top performers for Charlevoix were Madeline Boss (five aces, seven kills, eight digs), Anna Way (nine kills, three digs), Kelsey Pischner (four aces), Gloria Greene (13 assists) and Katie Paramo (seven digs).

The Rayders (7-6-5, 2-1 Lake Michigan Conference) host the eight-team Charlevoix Invitational on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m.

Johannesburg     3 Mancelona     0

Johannesburg-Lewiston swept Mancelona 25-15, 25-6, 25-14 in a Ski Valley match.

Lindsey Friday had four kills for Mancelona (0-4 in the league). Mancelona plays Gaylord St. Mary on Tuesday.

Grayling JV      6

St. Francis took a 34-6 halftime lead for a 50-6 JV win over Grayling.

Jake Klingelsmith scored three times for the Gladiators (2-2), including a 46-yard run to start the game. Joe Studzinski scored two touchdowns, Jake Summers and Dru McFadden each had one and the Gladiators forced a safety.

Sam Shrift, Cam Schlueter, Ryan Armour and Summers led the defense.

TC Central JV      43

Petoskey JV      40

Drew Girard had a big night to lead the TC Central JV to a 43-40 win over Petoskey.

Girard had three touchdowns and 130 yards on 12 carries. He also kicked five extra points and returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Sean Williams threw two touchdowns for the Trojans (2-1-1) and had 100 yards passing. On defense, he sealed the win with an interception while Cam Lange had two fumbles and six tackles.

TC West JV      28

Alpena's JV earned 46-28 Big North Conference win over TC West.

The Titans (2-2) had two rushing touchdowns from Dan Pfifer from 8 and 30 yards. Zach Schwert returned a kickoff 65 yards for a score while Wes Talbot caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Turnquist.
